Jaffe, 25, received his early education and training in his native Sao Paulo, Brazil. Com ing to the U.S., he matricu lated at Yale University where Claudio Jaffe he earned his bachelors degree and his masters from Yale School of Music. Since the age of 8, the list of competitions in which Mr. Jaffe has been awarded first prize is exten sive. In 1983, in the Debut Competition sponsored by The Cantor Kestenbaum To Serve Temple Israel For New Years Cantor Ray Kestenbaum of New York has been appointed to chant the Rosh Hashanah £md Yom Kippur Services at Temple Israel. Hazzan Kesten baum officiated with Rabbi M arc Wilson for eight years at Congregation Shearith Israel in Atlanta when Rabbi Wilson was Spiritual Leader in Atlanta. Hazzan Kestenbaum is an alunmus of Yeshiva Univer sity and of Columbia Univer sity. He studied “hazzanut,” cantorial repertoire, under the brother of the late renowned Cantor Kwartin and at Yeshiva University’s Can torial Institute. He is the year-round cantor at Highland Park Conser vative Temple and Center in Highland Park, NY, under the rabbinical leadership of Rabbi Yakov Hilsenrath. Cantor Kestenbaum's style empha sizes congregational singing and melody. His tunes are a blend of “nusach," traditional Jewish holiday music, scored modem choral pieces and ex pressive Israeli, Sephardic and chassidic themes. A soloist and choral singer with the famous Zamir Chorale in the early ’70s, he has a fluent command of the liturgy as well as Biblical and modem Hebrew. For the past three years, Ray Kestenbaum has produced and hosted CHIDON, a weekly call-in radio quiz program focusing on Biblical history, Jewish music and current events. Aired over WNYM, 1330 AM, New York, the popular show is billed as “radio’s Jewish non trivial call-in quiz.” When he is not singing or conducting his Torah quiz show, he is busy with his own advertising and marketing agency, serving numerous Jewish organiza tional clients. Young Musicians Foundation, he was awarded not only the Gregor Piatigorsky Memoried ‘‘Cello Prize as Top Cellist”, but also the H. Spencer Nilson Recital Award and the 1983 Debut Competition Award to the Best Competitor in all categories. The step from competition to the concert stage was an easy one. In 1983, Jaffe made his New York debut at Town Hall as part of the select Debut Series. Of his debut, Tim Page of The New York Times said, “Mr. Jaffe has what it takes to become an im portant artist: taste, tech nique, musicianship and con tagious youthful enthusiasm.” Accompanying Mr. Jaffe on piano will be Charlotte’s own international artist, who recently returned with The Charlotte Symphony Orches tra from their European tour, pianist Mark Tysinger.
