Viking Pen guin, Inc., 40 W. 23rd St., New York, NY 10010. 1987. 719 pages. $29.95. Reviewed by Rita Mond The Penguin Book of Modern Yiddish Verse is a major work of scholarship. Students of modern literature and those interested in exploring the Jewish experience of the last century are indeed in for a special treat. They will be at tracted to the moving, often tragic, yet ultimately life- affirming poems gathered in this very special collection. The poems range from evo cations of quiet shtetl life to attempts to deal with the bit ter horrors of the Holocaust to the kibbutzim of Israel. They recapitulate an entire phase of modern Jewish history. The works of thirty-nine Yiddish poets are included in this col lection. They are written both in Yiddish and English trans lation. The editors have also provided brief biographical sketches of each poet and go into historical and cultural essays of how Yiddish poetry was developed, describing also its primary characteristics and features. There is a collection of poems called “Poems from a Diary” by Abraham Sutzke- ver, one of which I found quite interesting. It is simply titled 1975. Sutzkever was born in 1913 in Smorgon, Lithuania. His childhood was in Siberia, where his parents fled during WWI. In Jewish folklore the sight of a water carrier bearing one or two full pails is an omen of good fortune; empty pails foretell bad fortune. 1975 The funeral’s early, the con cert is late. I go to both (such is my fate). A yoke’s round my neck, with two brimming pails. One’s for good luck, the other one fails. If one pail hangs empty, you can guess that the other will never attempt to outdo its own brother. When the salt’s lost its savor, will it pay through the nose for seven salt shakers, set out in nice rows? And the light! Would it wrinkle and burst if a shade didn’t trouble to water its thirst? The funeral’s early, the con cert is late I go to both (such is my fate), to play at the pairing of music with clay: a pail of good fortune, a pail of dismay. Together, together, the that and the this, and a beam of light curving to swim the abyss. Such is the link of the scythe to the ground, such is the union of fiddler and sound. Here is the binding of now and of then. Here is the coupling of women with men. —translated by Cynthia Ozick Encapsulating an era of Jewish culture.
