Joel and Cindy Ostrow and Sol and Ada Sha piro have pledged to under write an entire diabetes research fellowship for two years through Charlotte Benefactors For The Cure, a special project of Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Interna tional (JDF). The fellowship will be named The Ostrow- Shapiro Fund of Charlotte Benefactors For The Cure. When asked about their gift, Ada Shapiro explained that she has seen the devastation of diabetes smd knows that the answers are needed quickly. “Diabetes does not discrimi nate by age or background. It can strike everyone as it has our families and friends.” Cin- di Ostrow commented, “We look at our healthy children and realize that others deserve the same opportunities.” Because Sol’s mother died from complications of diabetes and the recent loss of Sol and Joel’s friend, Bernard Richter, also to complications of dia betes, it made it even more urgent that they put into ef fect their desire to support the research into the causes, com- phcations and cure of diabetes. When pledging their gifts, Joel Ostrow and Sol Shapiro said that their families wanted to fully fund a research grant to ensure that expert work could be done in a short period of time. “The work of Roz Green- spon has influenced us to make this commitment. We have seen how the research Cindi & Joel Ostrow dollars are being used.” In September 1988, the research recipient of the Ostrow-Shapiro funded fel lowship will be chosen by the Medical-Science Advisory Board of Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and announced in various national publications along with other JDF funded research. Charlotte Benefactors was started in 1984 by Roz Green- spon who in 1971 founded the Charlotte JDF chapter. When discussing the Ostrow-Shapiro gift, Mrs. Greenspon seiid, “These families have set a remarkable exeunple and a new precedent for diabetes re search funding through Charlotte Benefactors.
