Keynote speaker of the
evening was Marty F. Stein, of
Milwaukee. Stein is a busi
nessman active in numerous
philanthropic endeavors. He is
Chairman of the Board of the
United Jewish Appeal, mem
ber of the Executive Commit
tee of the Milwaukee Jewish
Federation, and an active par
ticipant in AIPAC.
Stein told how UJA was
also founded in ’38. Before
Kristallnacht, said Stein, the
Jews of America were alone.
Nobody cared about us and we
were fearful of making waves.
Even if the Nazis were to have
let the Jews leave Germany,
they had no place to go.
After the terrible years of
1938-45, he emphasiz^, it was
seen how Jews must never
again be without a homeland.
There must always be a place
for Jews, stressed Stein, be it
in Israel or a caring communi
ty such as Charlotte. It is for
this very reason that the Fed
eration must continue to grow.
In the past, such actions as
the exodus of Ethiopian Jews
to Israel, the Israeli destruc
tion of the Iraqi atomic reac
tor and the successful waging
of the 1973, 1967 and 1948
wars would have been difficult
to sustain without help from
Federations throughout the
U.S.
Emily Zimmem, president
of Women’s Division and vice
president of the Charlotte
Jewish Federation, spoke on
“The Call to Action,” the case
for the 1989 Chailotte Jewish
Federation Campaign. She em
phasized the importance of ac
tive participation and giving
in this Campaign.
The evening closed with a
social gathering and partaking
of sumptious desserts catered
by Peggy Gartner and Janet
Lefkowitz. i

Dr. Albright Addresses Jewish
Community on Israel Trip
Dr. Robert Albright, presi
dent of Johnson C. Smith Uni
versity, recently spoke about
his observations on his June
trip to Israel. Dr. Albright was
part of a delegation of leaders
of Black universities. The tour
was sponsored by the Anti-
Defamation League of B’nai
B'rith.
Dr. Albright first noted that
he and other delegation mem
bers were impressed with the
agricultural and scientific ad
vances pioneered by the Israe
lis. Although these advances
are well-known, seeing them
first hand makes one appre
ciate the hardships of the land
and the effort that has made
such successes possible.
The delegation was also
struck by Israel’s endeavors
to instruct children in Jewish
history. Museums such as the
Museum of the Diaspora es
pecially attracted their atten
tion.
Tour participants met with
Israeli and Arab leaders and
gained a deeper understanding
of the roots and feelings
underlying the conflict. For
anyone who is planning to
travel to Israel, or for anyone
who wants a better apprecia
tion of how ordinary Israelis,
Palestinians and Israeli Arabs
feel. Dr. Albright recom
mended a book by New York
Times correspondent David K.
Shipley called “Arab & Jew:
Wounded Spirits in the Prom
ised Land.” The book is avail
able at the Charlotte-Mecklen-
burg Public Library.
The Community Relations
Committee of the Charlotte
Jewish Federation sponsored
Dr. Albright’s talk, which was
held during a Friday evening
Shabbat service at Temple
Israel.
