Page 9-THE NEWS-December, 1988 ^ Women^s Division of Federation UJA’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee Mect thc Mcmbcrs of Our Cabinet Looks to Future Challenges Each month a member(s) of our Cabinet will be profiled in the CJN. Several hundred United Jewish Appeal leaders from throughout the U.S. are ex pected to participate in UJA’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee Cel ebration December 11-12 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The celebration will include two major symposia focusing on the UJA at mid-century: “Israel Among the Nations,” with Abba Eban and Henry Kissinger, panelists, and Ber nard Kalb, moderator; and “The American Jewish Condi tion,” with Norman Podhoretz and Rabbi Harold Schulweis, panelists, and Professor David Sidorsky, moderator. There will also be a gala show, a photo exhibit depict ing UJA’s history and a private tour of the New York Public Library exhibit, “A Sign and a Witness: 2,000 Years of Hebrew Books and Il luminated Manuscripts.” An earlier highlight of the 50th Anniversary Celebration was the Jubilee Mission to Israel in mid-October. On November 9, the anni versary date of Kristallnacht UJA sponsored “A Night to Remember” when all Ameri cans were urged to light a can dle as a solemn act of remem brance. A commemorative poster was distributed by UJA to 11,000 Jewish com munity institutions through out the country, urging all to m£u*k this day. Commenting on the UJA’s 50th Anniversary program, Robert E. Loup of Denver, General Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Jubilee and a former UJA National Chair man, stated: “Our December gala helps us culminate 50 years of achievement on behalf of the Jewish people world wide. But at UJA we see it equally as a portal, the en tranceway to our next 50 years. We are hard at work preparing for future years of campaigning to help meet the substantial needs of Jews worldwide that are likely in the 1900s — and beyond.” HAPPY CHANUKAH Bernard Kalb Henry Kissinger Claire Putterman Claire is a third generation Dillon, South Carolinian. She stated that “Although Dillon is a small town, my strong family life centered around our synagogue, of which my great grandfather was one of the founders.” Claire received a BA in French and Psychology and has a masters degree in French Education. She taught French for 7 years. She has traveled extensively through out Europe and has taken more than 150 students on tours. Claire married Paul Putter man, a physician, in 1977. They have two children, Rachel, 3 years, and Matthew, 1 year. She was one of the leaders to spearhead the successful ef fort to consolidate the Com munity Preschool and has served on the Preschool Board and on the Preschool Task Force. Claire has held the posi tion of Community Volunteer Vice President for HaLailah Chapter B’nai B’rith Women. She has served 4 years on HaLailah’s Board and on Women’s Division Cabinet. Claire was recognized as “Most Successful Solicitor in the 1987-88 Women’s Cam paign.” Claire Putteraan Lee Blumenthal Claire remarked, “I first became aware of the Charlotte Jewish Federation from my husband. He has been on the Federation Board for 5 years. After working on Super Sun day, I realized the importance for all Jews to be associated in some way. My commitment to Federation is 100%.” Lee Blumenthal Lee was bom and grew up in High Point, N.C. and has lived in Charlotte since 1970. She found her Jewish niche in the Reform movement. She began her participation in Jewish organizations with HaLailah Chapter BBW, having served as Membership Vice Presi dent. She is a past president of Temple Beth El V’Shalom Sis- erhood. Lee feels that education is the foundation of Jewish com mitment. “Mine started while serving on the education com mittee of W'omen’s Division when Baila Pransky chaired it. I spent severtil years on that committee and eventually co chaired the education event, ‘Terrorism and the Media’, with Jill Newman.” Lee went on a Young Lead ership Mission to Israel in 1985. She participated in the Soviet Jewry March in Decem ber 1987 and the Young Lead ership Conference in Washing ton in March 1988. She has served on Federation’s Young Leadership Cabinet. Lee chaired this year’s Women’s Division’s Pacesetters event. She became a “Lion of Judah” this year. Lee and husband Alan have two daughters, Jill and Stacy. Carmen! Ca Great Hair. Nails too!
