Holocaust Remembrance Dinner Held Nobel Peace Laureate Elie Wiesel declared at the fourth annual International Elie Wiesel Holocaust Remem brance Award Dinner in New York on December 4 that “for 2,000 years, we survived without the ques tion of ‘who is a Jew.’ I believe that an individual who links his destiny to the destiny of the people in Israel, and if Jerusalem lives in his memory, then he is a Jew.” “Religion and politics should never mix,” the noted author declared. “They can not but corrupt one another.” Wiesel cautioned Israel’s political leaders to beware of the consequences of Jewish division. “I am opposed to intolerance. I am opposed to bigotry in all forms. I am opposed to fanaticism and all so-called easy solutions.” More than 1,100 guests, the majority of them Holo caust survivors from North America, Europe and Latin America, attended the event in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel. The dais of 120 included 80 survivors and others who each had purchased $100,000 or more in Israel Bonds. Wiesel, a survivor of Auschwitz, joined Ben Meed, president of the American Gathering and Federation of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and dinner chairman, in presenting the Israel Bond Organization’s 1988 Elie Wiesel Holocaust Remem brance Award, created by noted sculptor Chaim Gross, to Samuel Pisar of Paris. The prestigious award is a bronze statue of “Isaiah.” It had the following citation: “Presented to Samuel Pisar, whose saga of survi val through the black night of the Holocaust and subse quent international achieve ments speak eloquently of the triumph of the human spirit as exemplified in a remarkable life and a deep devotion to his people.” Mr. Pisar accepted the award “in the name of the one million children of the Holocaust, including the hundreds of children from my school in Bialystok of which I am the sole survivor. * I also accept it in the name of the living, including the Survivors who are here tonight to celebrate the tri umph of freedom and life,” Declaring that he was speaking partially in behalf of “the sub-human, the little boy who began life in Poland and was expected to die in Auschwitz,” Pisar said that he “survived the greatest inferno of all time, Eich- mann’s inferno, which eclipsed Dante’s vision of hell.” He added: “Out of the uniqueness of our experi ence, we must give concrete meaning and concrete pur pose to our lives, to establish and keep up the links between the past and the present, between the spirit ual and the parochial, between the Diaspora and Israel.” PAPERTOWN „-r1 Paper First OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Full line of paper and allied products Cafeteria & Party Supplies No Minimums • We Breai( Cases Commercial Accounts Invited Free Delivery • Custom Printed Bar/Bat Mitzvah Piper Fim franchises available Invitations Nationwide In select areas • Discounted Always 4416 Independence S68-6663 517 North Pollc (US 521) Pineville 889-5965 adam's moRk. hotel Call our Director of Catering 372-4100, Extension 2270.
