The hearings also dis closed evidence that the President had ordered Schorr investigated by the FBI. Following the Watergate hearings, CBS assigned Schorr to cover investiga tions of CIA and FBI scan dals. In 1976, the House of Representatives voted to suppress the final report of its investigating committee. Schorr arranged for the pub lication of an advance copy World Beat he had exclusively obtained, leading to his suspension by CBS and to an investigation by the House Ethics Com mittee, Although threatened with jail for contempt of Congress, Schorr refused to disclose his source. Schorr subsequently wrote a book on his account of the Watergate experiences. Clear ing the Air. He served as Regents Professor of Jour nalism at the University of California at Berkeley and for two years wrote a syndi cated newspaper column. In 1979, Schorr was asked by -cont’d from page 4 recently conducted a drag net in six Israeli cities and towns to round up foreigners working in Israel illegally. They hit restaurants, bars, hotels, factories and other places where aliens are like ly to be employed illegally. At the end of the day, their “catch” numbered about 120. Those rounded up so far come from the Philip pines,Thailand, Portugal, Ghana and Britain. Many were employed as kitchen workers, housemaids or in factory jobs that Israeli workers prefer to avoid. • OTTAWA (JTA) - Six of the eight Jewish candidates in Canada’s parliamentary elections won seats in the new House of Commons. Most of them bucked the popular tide that returned the Progressive Conserva tive Party of incumbent Prime Minister Brian Mulro- ney to office with a comfor table majority of 170 seats in the 295-member house. • Soviet officials informed a large group of long-term refuseniks, many of them well known, that their pur ported knowledge of “state secrets” would no longer be used as grounds for barring their emigration. 2,334 Jews were permitted to emigrate in November, 179 of whom went to Israel. Some 15,640 Jews have been allowed to emigrate so far this year, compared to 8,155 last year and a mere 914 the year before. Ted Turner to help create the Cable News Network, serv ing in Washington as its senior correspondent until 1985, when he left in a dis pute over an effort to limit his editorial independence. Having done occasional commentaries for NPR, Schorr was asked to expand his role there, participating in weekend programming as well as weekday commentar ies and “live” events such as the Iran-Contra hearings. He now makes his headquar ters at NPR.
