OfnwMMcaftaMLTwiilrNMrWofWllworiilMHMMGiiljifl Temple Israel Receives Award For Rachel House Sponsorship United Synagogue of America, the nationwide organization of Conserva tive congregations, awarded Temple Israel its “Commu nity Participation Award” for the Temple’s sponsorship of Rachel House, a shelter for homeless women and children. The award was presented during United Synagogue’s Southeast Re gional Biennial Convention held in Miami in November. Temple Israel President Steven Hockfield accepted the award on behalf of the congregation. Other congregation dele gates to the convention were Jerry and Barbara Levin and Hugo and Helga Rosen- berger. Steve subsequently presented the award during the Temple’s December Board meeting to Linda Bin- nick, who has led the devel opment and operation of Rachel House since its incep tion in 1986. Rachel House is staffed entirely by volunteers from Charlotte’s Jewish and non- Jewish community. If you would like to help, please call the Temple office, 376-2796. Temple Beth El V’Shalom News In January, Temple Beth El V’Shalom welcomed 50 new members, who joined the Temple family this past year, with a dinner hosted by the Membership Committee headed by Roger Meyers, vice president. The special Shabbat service, arranged by Steven Haas, had all the new members as partici pants. Tu B’Shevat was cele brated by the children dur ing their third Tot Shabbat of the year. Our 2-year- olds have changed their rooms to become a restau rant, a supermarket, a school and a hospital. They will get a chance to visit and play in each of the rooms. They will also be making “stone soup,** which they will be serving for lunch. The 3s will be concentrat ing on winter weather proj ects, cutting out snowflakes, maldng snowmen, pengiun and igloo pictures. In cele bration of Tu B’Shevat, they made paper tube almond trees and bird feeders. The 4s are learning about the seasons and months of the year. They will be mak ing a “Season Book’* as part of this unit. They learned the letters “J” for January and “T” for Tu B’Shevat, by making a jam “J” and a toothpick “T”. Other pro jects for Tu B’Shevat in cluded a Tu B’Shevat tree, growing “hairy potatoes,” and counting and gluing seeds. The Pre-K class is also involved in a unit about winter. The children have been freezing water, floating ice cubes, learning about iiibemation and migration, and continuing to use their home-made thermometers. Preschool Registration for 1989-90 is as follows: Mon., Feb. 6 — Registra tion begins for upcoming 3s. Mon., Feb. 13 — Repstra- tion begins for upcoming 2s. Note; Registration for 4s and Pre-K began on Jan. 30. Registration forms will be accepted in the Preschool office on Mon.-Thurs. of each week, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Please note that no registration form will be accepted with out the appropriate registra tion/supply fee.
