Temple Israel Receives Award
For Rachel House Sponsorship
United Synagogue of
America, the nationwide
organization of Conserva
tive congregations, awarded
Temple Israel its “Commu
nity Participation Award”
for the Temple’s sponsorship
of Rachel House, a shelter
for homeless women and
children. The award was
presented during United
Synagogue’s Southeast Re
gional Biennial Convention
held in Miami in November.
Temple Israel President
Steven Hockfield accepted
the award on behalf of the
congregation.
Other congregation dele
gates to the convention were
Jerry and Barbara Levin
and Hugo and Helga Rosen-
berger. Steve subsequently
presented the award during
the Temple’s December
Board meeting to Linda Bin-
nick, who has led the devel
opment and operation of
Rachel House since its incep
tion in 1986.
Rachel House is staffed
entirely by volunteers from
Charlotte’s Jewish and non-
Jewish community. If you
would like to help, please call
the Temple office, 376-2796.
Temple Beth El V’Shalom News
In January, Temple Beth
El V’Shalom welcomed 50
new members, who joined
the Temple family this past
year, with a dinner hosted by
the Membership Committee
headed by Roger Meyers,
vice president. The special
Shabbat service, arranged
by Steven Haas, had all the
new members as partici
pants.
Tu B’Shevat was cele
brated by the children dur
ing their third Tot Shabbat
of the year. Tot Shabbats are
always a special time for the
younger members of the
Temple and their parents.
The next Tot Shabbat is
scheduled for March 18.

By Carol Klein, director
After our winter break,
classes have been geared for
busy months. Our 2-year-
olds have changed their
rooms to become a restau

will get a chance to visit and
play in each of the rooms.
They will also be making
“stone soup,** which they
will be serving for lunch.
The 3s will be concentrat
ing on winter weather proj
ects, cutting out snowflakes,
maldng snowmen, pengiun
and igloo pictures. In cele
bration of Tu B’Shevat, they
made paper tube almond
trees and bird feeders.
The 4s are learning about
the seasons and months of
the year. They will be mak
ing a “Season Book’* as part
of this unit. They learned the
letters “J” for January and
“T” for Tu B’Shevat, by
making a jam “J” and a
toothpick “T”. Other pro
jects for Tu B’Shevat in
cluded a Tu B’Shevat tree,
