B’nai B’rith Men
The Annual Christmas
Substitution Program was
again a huge success. Over
80 volunteers gave about
four hours each of their time
to work at all four hospitals
and the county jail on
Christmas Eve and Christ
mas Day so that non-Jewish
workers could have time off
to spend with their families.
The response to our call for
volunteers was tremendous;
we thank all for helping with
this special project. Special
thanks to Steve Menaker,
Jim Meadows, Eric Levine,
Jeff Meyer and Scott Menak
er for coordinating the vol
unteer assignments. Steve
also gave a “great perfor
mance” on WBTV’s “Top of
the Day” program.
On Sunday, Jan. 29, mem
bers of B’nai B’rith Men and
AZA participated in a joint
program honoring Tu B’She-
vat. To commemorate the
Jewish Arbor Day, dogwood
trees were planted in Fourth
Ward Park as part of our
community service projects.
The manual labor was
spread out among all those
participating. Once the trees
were safely planted, the
group then went out to lunch
to celebrate.

BBYOers Attended
Regional Convention
On December 23 at 10:30
a.m. 35 excited teens gath
ered in the parking lot of
Shalom Park. A bus was
prepared to take them to the
Greensboro Marriott for
B’nai B’rith Youth Organi
zation’s Eastern Region
Convention. Lasting for four
days, Jewish teens from all
over North Carolina and
Virginia had the time of
their lives participating in
programs and contests.
Two hundred teens,
grades 9-12, started the wee
kend off right with ice break
ers and “shmoozing.” After
Shabbat services, a program
on “how to relax” helped
everyone in dealing with our
high paced society. With the
theme, “Making Your Way
in the World Today,” the
participants learned every
thing from“Who is a Jew” to
“Drugs in Sports.”
Composed of nearly 20
chapters. Eastern Region
BBG and AZA naturally
competed in such events as
chapter song, impromptu
oratory, skits.
Chai Chaverim BBG of
Charlotte won the “Member-
in-Training” song and Mick
ey Barak Aberman AZA
won chapter cheer and chap
ter video. In individual
awards, Scott Silverstein
won creative arts competi
tion and Scott Cohen won
2nd place in oratory. The
most prestigious award,
“best chapter” was present
ed to Chai Chaverim BBG.
Regional elections were
also held and Charlotte
BBYO did better in this
category than it has done in
years. Elected as Eastern
Region BBG mit-mom was
Sherry Seitlin. Eastern Re
gion AZA’s newly elected
board includes Richard Ro-
senfeld, administrative as
sistant; Scott Cohen, secre
tary; Rael Gorelick, presi
dent.
The annual convention
finally came to an end on
December 26. Everyone left
the convention with smiles
on their faces and loads of
new fnends from all over the
region.
If you are interested in
joining BBYO or if you know
somebody who is eligible to
join but has not been con
tacted, please call Julie Dau-
mit, BBG president, 366-
8693 or Kevin Besnoy, AZA
president, 366-0845.
