U.S. Maccabiah Team Appointed Page 25-THE NEWS-May 1989 As reported in April’s ‘CJN’, Stacey Schefflin of Charlotte, NC has been ap pointed as a member of the team that will represent the U.S. at the 13th World Mac cabiah Games in Israel, July 3-13. This was formerly an nounced by Robert E. Spiv- ak, U.S. Maccabiah Commit tee General Chairman and Jeffrey Laikind, All Sports Chairman. The World Maccabiah Games, which are held every four years, pit Jewish ath letes from all over the world in competition similar to that of the Olympics. More than 4,000 world-class ath letes from 38 countries, in cluding over 500 from the U.S., will participate in this summer’s games. They will compete in some 30 sports, ranging from basketball to badminton. The third largest interna tional competition, the Mac cabiah Games are also a cultural experience. Athletes are housed according to sport, rather than country, making them the only inter national sporting event to follow this procedure. “The Games develop pride in one’s Jewish heritage, as well as camaraderie between American Jews and their counterparts in Israel,” Spivak said. “Together they see and experience the beau ty of Israel and leam more about their heritage and themselves.” Quoting the Maccabiah Games slogan, he added: “The Games are truly ‘two weeks to expe rience, a lifetime to re member.* ” Athletes from the U.S. are sponsored by the U.S. Com mittee Sports for Israel (USCSFp, a non-profit or ganization that also pro- JWB Leadership Met in NYC Key leaders of Jewish Community Centers from throughout North America gathered at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City on April 7-9 for a JWB Special Leadership Convention. The event is expected to have far- ranging implications for each Jewish Community Center and for the Center movement as a whole. Through workshop discus sions focused on future plan ning and action-oriented task forces, participants had the unique opportunity to influence the quality of Jew ish life in North America. The ideas expressed and developed by participants in the Special Leadership Con vention fueled a year-long Century 2 process of future planning and celebration that will culminate in the 1990 JWB Biennial in Wa shington, D.C. Centers will participate in a variety of local and continent-wide initiatives, including photo graphy and essay contests bas^ on the theme “The Center of Your Life,” a youth leadership conference, an oral history project, a memo rabilia display and program showcase, and development of JCC Month — a major annual event to begin in the fall of 1990. sports and education pro grams in Israel. Gymnast Mitch Gaylord, swimmer Mark Spitz, bas ketball stars Ernie Grunfeld and Danny Schayes, tennis players Andrea Leand and Brad Gilbert, and golfer Corey Pavin are some of the top U.S. Maccabiah cham pions in recent years.
