As reported in April’s
‘CJN’, Stacey Schefflin of
Charlotte, NC has been ap
pointed as a member of the
team that will represent the
U.S. at the 13th World Mac
cabiah Games in Israel, July
3-13. This was formerly an
nounced by Robert E. Spiv-
ak, U.S. Maccabiah Commit
tee General Chairman and
Jeffrey Laikind, All Sports
Chairman.
The World Maccabiah
Games, which are held every
four years, pit Jewish ath
letes from all over the world
in competition similar to
that of the Olympics. More
than 4,000 world-class ath
letes from 38 countries, in
cluding over 500 from the
U.S., will participate in this
summer’s games. They will
compete in some 30 sports,
ranging from basketball to
badminton.
The third largest interna
tional competition, the Mac
cabiah Games are also a
cultural experience. Athletes
are housed according to
sport, rather than country,
making them the only inter
national sporting event to
follow this procedure.
“The Games develop pride
in one’s Jewish heritage, as
well as camaraderie between
American Jews and their
counterparts in Israel,”
Spivak said. “Together they
see and experience the beau
ty of Israel and leam more
about their heritage and
themselves.” Quoting the
Maccabiah Games slogan,
he added: “The Games are
truly ‘two weeks to expe
rience, a lifetime to re
member.* ”
Athletes from the U.S. are
