She success fully compete in the 1985 Toronto and the 1987 Chica go Youth Maccabiah Games. There will be 12 senior girls and two junior members of the Women’s Swim Team who will be competing to gether with 4000 Jewish athletes from 38 comitries in 35 different sports. Alexis is on the Headmas ter’s List as a rising 11th grader at Charlotte Latin School. This determined and enthusiastic 15-year-old swims competitively on the Senior Team of the Mecklen burg Aquatic Club and has swum for the JCC as well as Alexis Leraer her school swim team. She is grateful for this opportun ity to represent the Charlotte Jewish community and the JCC at the Maccabiah Games. Vice presidents are Leon Levine and Harry Lemer; Don Bernstein will serve as sea^tary and Abe Luski as treasurer. These officers will serve for a one- year term. Directors serving a two-year term are: Alan Blumenthal, Don Bernstein, Shelton Gorelick, Harry Lerner and Leon Levine. One-year term directors are Joel Ostrow and Miles Le vine. The following served on the nominating commit tee: Mark Bernstein, chair; Larry Gerber, Bobbi Bern stein, Harry Swimmer, Steve Hockfleld, Bill Grifenhagen and Robert Brodsky. Harry Swimmer is the out-going president. Charlotte Bureau Of Jewish Education Is Established The Board of the Charlotte Jewish Federation unanim ously approved the estab lishment of a Charlotte Bu reau of Jewish Education. The Proposal for the Bureau was published in the May 1989 issue of the Charlotte Jewish News. “Funding is the last re maining make-it-or-break-it issue towsurd the establish ment of our Bureau,” stated Rabbi Marc Wilson, chair man of the Federation Edu cation Committee Task Force for the Bureau. “We must now direct our best energies toward finding generous benefactors who, as an investment in our children and in the creative future of our community, will contribute the seed mo ney that will enable the Bureau to function for a pilot See BUREAU page 8 Mike Van Glish Appointed JCC Prexy Barry Hantman, execu tive director of the Jewish community Center, is pleased to announce that Mike Van Glish has been appointed the next president of the JCC. Mike succeeds Larry Gerber, who has served as president of the JCC for the past two years. Prior to becoming presi dent, Mike served on the Executive Committee of the JCC as treasurer. He has been involved at the JCC for the last six years, dating back to his days as a member of the Health and Physical Education committee. Mike has a genuine love for the sport of tennis. When asked recently what his aspirations are as pres ident of the Jewish Com munity Center, Mike stated, “I have two main objectives. The first is my hope that the JCC will work closely to gether and more coopera tively with other Jewish organizations regarding^ joint programs. The Jewish community in Charlotte is small and very close-knit and we all can benefit great ly from more joint ventures, especially around the holi days. My second aim is that we continue to attract new members and encourage ex isting members to become Mike Van GUsh more “regular” users of the J. This is one of the finest facilities in the community with programs for all ages and all walks of Ufe. I don’t know where else you can go where needs for all family members can be met. I am very proud to be part of such a fine institution.” Mike and his wife Judie have two children, David and Missy. They have re sided in Charloitte for the past 12 years. This party, in appreciation of our senior citizens, was estab lished as an annual event by Phil Levine, owner of Phil’s Deli. A complete buffet dinner will be provided along with plenty of entertainment, which will include VIVA KLEZMER! and a strolling accordianist. In addition to this, there will be door prizes and t-shirts presented to the attendees. There is no charge to our Chai members of the com munity, but reservations are a must.
