It has been tested successfully on humans, but needs further development be fore being approved for mass production. • TEL AVIV (JTA) — Healthy twins, a boy and a girl, born at Beilinson Hospital in Petach Tikva, represent a major ad vance in the technology of in- vitro fertilization and new hope for infertile couples everywhere. The infants were promptly dubbed the “Double Frozen Siberian Twins” because their father’s sperm had been frozen and the fertilized embryos, too, were put in deep freeze. They are believed to be the first babies whose genetic material, or DNA, was frozen twice, without suffer ing damage, improving the med ical tools to fight infertility. • NEW YORK (JTA) — The Rabbinical Council of the Syri an and Near Eastern Jewish Community will no longer per form any marriage without medical proof that both parties don’t have AIDS. The Brooklyn-based council is the first rabbinical authority to impose such a regulation, but speculated that others would follow suit. The regulation, which went into effect September 1, requires a doctor’s letter stating that the bride and groom have tested negative for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome before Sephardic rabbis will consider performing the ceremony. Dr. Hall completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic. She received her fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Susan M. Hail, M.D. Adam Multer, son of Elsa and Martin Multer, compiled a 4.0 GPA during his freshman year at the U. of GA. He was named to the Dean’s list and received the Peyton T. Andersen scholarship, established by W. Thomas Johnson, the CEO and publisher of the Los Angeles Times, for being the outstanding freshman in the School of Journalism. • Juli^ Simon, daughter of Sylvia and Leon Simon, was recognized for having the most outstanding portfolio in her graduating class at the Atlanta Institute of the Arts in Georgia. • “The Hot Sonato,” a comic opera with book, words and music by Gerard “Gerry” Rohde, is now in rehearsal at the Opera Workshop of the Music Department of Montclair State College in Upper Montclair, NJ. It will be performed by the Opera Workshop cast on the campus of the college under the direction of Edward Pierson, Professor of Voice and director of the Workshop, on December 1 and 2. Professor Pierson is a distinguished singer who has performed leading roles at the New York City Opera Company and the Chicago Lyric Opera Company. He has been a soloist with leading symphony orchestras and has performed on national television. The same cast is also scheduled to perform “The Hot Sonato” at Pease Auditorium, CPCC in Charlotte on Feb. 16, 17 and 18, 1990. • Gabrielle Reznek was one of three students from Charlotte awarded educational grants-in-aid by the Fieldcrest Foundation. The awards ranging from $200-$1,200 for 1989-90 academic year go to children of Fieldcrest Cannon employees. She is the daughter of Phyllis Reznek, with information services in Kannapolis, and Phillip Reznek, and is a student at New York University. • Florence Jaffa has had her painting “Countryside #7” accepted for inclusion in the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem Dimensions ’89 National Juried Art Competition. It will be on exhibit at the Associated Artists, Milton Rhodes Galleries, 226 N. Marshall St., Winston-Salem, N.C. until November 26.
