I personally thank all of you who donated cans to this great cause. The food was turned over to Jewish Family Services. I’m sure those who received these cans would thank you too! — Cher Fox N.C. Hillel Had Successful Semester North Carolina Hillel had a wonderful Fall semester, with excellent programs and atten dance. We have been successful in adding Israel Awareness Programs to our calendar and had a variety of speakers who spoke on different aspects of Israel such as David Peleg, Minister of Information, Israeli Embassy, Washington, D.C. and Walter Zanger, author, Israeli Tour Guide. An Israel Public Affairs Com mittee group has been started on the Duke campus, and an Israel Awareness Group at UNC-Cha- pel Hill campus. Both groups have been busy getting ready for the AIPAC Southeastern Re gional Conference which will take place Feb, 11 at Duke. Students from North and South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Virginia and Alabama are included in the Conference. Hillel held a fall Shabbaton. Students from UNC-CH, Duke UNC-G, East Carolina Univer sity, North Carolina State, and University of South Carolina attended the weekend. High lights of the weekend included Friday night services and dinner with a Soviet Jewish family who recently arrived in Chapel Hill. They were very generous in answering questions the students had about life in Russia. Satur day night we had Havdalah services and a pizza party. On Sunday we had a lox and bagel brunch, followed by a discussion on Jewish men and women communicating with each other. The group was led by Pat Barry, associate professor in the School of Public Health, UNC-CH. The entire weekend was a huge success. Lauren Stone and Rabbi Fischer concentrated on making at least one visit to the extension campuses this semester. We were able to visit NC State twice. Rabbi Fischer went for the orientation for new students and another time for a bagel brunch. Both events were well attended. Rabbi Fischer spoke at UNC-G on “Current Issues in the Jewish Community.” Wc attended East Carolina University’s Jewish Identity Study Break; Rabbi Michael Chin, the new rabbi in Greenville, NC, helped to lead the discussion. - L.S. November was a busy month for Chai Chaverim BBG. On Nov. 4, there was a sleepover at Kara Silverstein’s house for Winter Cultural practice. On Nov. 9, the MITs had picture frame painting plus MIT elections. The new MIT officers are: Mara Jacobsohn, president; Melissa Rosenberg, correspond ing secretary; Rosanne Garfield, recording secretary; Sara Schlosberg, sunshine. The attic sale, held on Nov. 12, was a very successful fund raiser. On Nov. 19 there was a BBG board meeting to prepare for the Winter Cultural Conven tion; a preview of this conven tion was held for the parents. Winter Cultural, Dec. 1-3, was a fun experience. We met Jewish teenagers from all over North Carolina. Our chapter did ex tremely well at this competitive convention. A MIT Day, held on Dec. 10, included a scavenger hunt at Eastland Mall, ice-skating and shopping. A Sabbath dinner and anti-Semitism program for the entire chapter were held at Kara Silverstein’s house on Dec. 15. The Regional Convention took place Dec. 22-25 at the Sheraton Hotel in Durham. The MITs sponsored a French Cha- nukah party on Dec. 29 at Lauren Stark’s house. Pizza and Video Day On Oct. 29, Jr. Kadima kicked off the year for the second time by going to Show Biz for a day of pizza lunch and fun with the video arcade games. Our orig inal plans were to kick off the year with a trip to Carrigan Farms on Sept. 24. However, due to Hurricane Hugo we had to cancel the trip. Jr. Kadima don’t fret, the Carrigan Farm trip has been rescheduled for later in the school year. Airport Tour On Nov. 12, Jr. Kadima flew to the Charlotte Airport fun bus style. They toured, ate lunch, and were very knowledgeable on what to do in the airport. The staff explained how to drop off luggage, purchase a ticket and check in at the terminal. Also they were shown how to get their luggage when arriving. It was an excellent learning experience as well as lots of fun for all.
