Schools Busy at End of Year Page 9-THE NEWS-January 1990 cont’d from preceding page Susan Doobrow has been teaching her kindergartners about human feelings and rela tions. Elaine Chernotsky, who is a special resource teacher and a parent of one of Susan’s stu dents, visited with the kinder garten children and talked to them about special feelings. “We really enjoyed listening to her story and playing the feelings bag game,” said Susan. Elaine will be visiting with the children on a regular basis. Michelle Hodges has also been progressing smoothly with her first and second graders. “We are involved in a serious study of math, reading and science,” said Michelle. The Lubavitch Talmud Torah students, under the direction of Mariashi Groner, were busy learning about Chanukah and its many beautiful laws and cus toms. They crafted their own menorahs and learned the com plete story of Chanukah. They also practiced for the spectacular Chanukah outdoor menorah lighting at the Arboretum shop ping center, where they enter- n Little Indians at Lubavitch Preschool Lubavitch Preschool children at fire station HOffy Elaine Chernotsky with ‘‘feelings bags” at the Day School. Both pro jects were initiated by the Lu- bavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Mena- chem M. Schneerson, on a worldwide scale. This coincides with his call to increase activities in honor of the Jewish year 5750, which has become known as the year of miracles. The first project is to gather people together on Shabbat for the purpose of the study of Torah, this in addition to the services held at the Chabad House. Every Shabbat at the Chabad House after the morning service, everyone gathers around for kiddush and refreshments with a toast of L’chaim followed with a study session. The session is in the beginning of the weekly Torah portion; a verse of Torah is learned with the famous commentary of Rashi and also explained according to tradi tional Chassidic interpretation. About every two weeks a full- scale kiddush feast is held on Shabbat at the Chabad House, where traditional Shabbat foods like “Gefilte Fish” and “Cho- lent” are enjoyed by the partic ipants. During the kiddush meal, the Torah session is studied and peppered with interesting Chas sidic tales. The second project involves all the teachers and children at Lubavitch schools for a special Tzedakah undertaking. Every Friday Rabbi Yossi Groner, director of Lubavitch of North Carolina, distributes “coins for charity” to all children and teachers who in turn drop the coins into a large “Pushke” (charity box) which is later distributed to many worthy causes. The idea is that the employer or director of an organization, institution or company partici pates in a worthy cause on a weekly basis with his or her employees. What’s more, this kind of participation initiates the student and all the participants to involve themselves with good charitable activities. The children eagerly look forward to this project each Friday as they and their teachers fulfill this wonderful mitzvah.
