Guest speaker is Howard Stone. There will be a pre-reception for Pacesetters and Lion of Judah members. Chairwomen for the evening, Margie Goldstein and Peggy Gartner, have promised that between the elegance of the hotel, the fabulous menu, the informative speaker, and the heart-warming causes we are supporting, that this event will be truly unforgettable. Mr. Stone has a very exciting background. He has spent most of his adult life in what he calls the “historic adventure” of saving Jewish lives and rebuild ing the Jewish homeland. While traveling through Europe more than 20 years ago, he became involved in a clandestine oper ation smuggling Jews out of North Africa and into Israel. Arriving in Haifa with the first Howard Stone group of refugees, he chose to stay in Israel and became a mem ber of a young Kibbutz. He was soon recruited into governmeiit service and for several years was part of many sensitive projects that are still classified today. Returning to the United States, he joined the United Jewish Appeal. He first served as Director of the Young Lead ership Cabinet where he was instrumental in helping to create a new generation of leadership •for our communities, then as Director of Overseas Programs with responsibility for all UJA activities abroad. Today he is Senior Vice President to Oper ation Independence, a private enterprise aimed at strengthen ing Israel’s economy at the request of Prime Minister Peres, When the Government of Israel initiated* its economic recovery program in the mid- ’80s, Howard was asked to play a role in that effort and helped to create an international coali tion of businessmen committed to advancing private sector growth. He now serves as Executive Director of the Zionist Organi zation of America. Howard holds advanced de grees in both Literature and International Relations and is a gifted writer whose work has appeared in leading publications here and abroad. Charlotte is very fortunate to have the opportunity to hear Mr. Stone speak. She was sent to Auschwitz at the age of 19. The idyllic world of the au thor’s childhood died forever in the nightmare of the Holocaust, but courage, love and humanity managed to survive, as evi denced in the harrowing and heroic moments that stand out in the memoir.
