“Main Event” to Feature Adventurous Speaker Southern Spring Show Gala
To Benefit Soviet Jews
By Sandra Hirsch
The Women’s Division of the
Charlotte Jewish Federation is
extremely excited to present the
2nd Annual “Main Event.” Last
year’s event was so well received
that the committee worked extra
diligently to exceed the previous
festivities.
“Main Event” will be Wednes
day; Dec. 5, 7 p.m. at the brand
new Omni Charlotte Hotel.
Guest speaker is Howard Stone.
There will be a pre-reception for
Pacesetters and Lion of Judah
members.
Chairwomen for the evening,
Margie Goldstein and Peggy
Gartner, have promised that
between the elegance of the
hotel, the fabulous menu, the
informative speaker, and the
heart-warming causes we are
supporting, that this event will
be truly unforgettable.
Mr. Stone has a very exciting
background. He has spent most
of his adult life in what he calls
the “historic adventure” of
saving Jewish lives and rebuild
ing the Jewish homeland. While
traveling through Europe more
than 20 years ago, he became
involved in a clandestine oper
ation smuggling Jews out of
North Africa and into Israel.
Arriving in Haifa with the first
Howard Stone
group of refugees, he chose to
stay in Israel and became a mem
ber of a young Kibbutz. He was
soon recruited into governmeiit
service and for several years was
part of many sensitive projects
that are still classified today.
Returning to the United
States, he joined the United
Jewish Appeal. He first served
as Director of the Young Lead
ership Cabinet where he was
instrumental in helping to create
a new generation of leadership
•for our communities, then as
Director of Overseas Programs
with responsibility for all UJA
activities abroad. Today he is
Senior Vice President to Oper
ation Independence, a private
enterprise aimed at strengthen
ing Israel’s economy at the
request of Prime Minister Peres,
When the Government of
Israel initiated* its economic
recovery program in the mid-
’80s, Howard was asked to play
a role in that effort and helped
to create an international coali
tion of businessmen committed
to advancing private sector
growth.
He now serves as Executive
Director of the Zionist Organi
zation of America.
Howard holds advanced de
grees in both Literature and
International Relations and is a
gifted writer whose work has
appeared in leading publications
here and abroad.
Charlotte is very fortunate to
have the opportunity to hear Mr.
Stone speak.
Recently Joan Zimmerman,
president of Southern Shows,
Inc., announced that the 1991
Southern Spring Show Gala
Celebration will benefit the
resettlement of Soviet Jewish
families in Charlotte. The Cel
ebration is scheduled for Sun
day, Feb. 24, 1991 from 7 until
10 p.m. at the Charlotte Mer
chandise Mart. Previous bene
ficiaries include the North Ca
rolina Performing Arts Center
and the North Carolina Zoo.
Chairing the 1991 Gala Ben
efit will be Herman Blumenthal
and Jane McColl. “We’re
thrilled with this marvelous
opportunity. The Celebration
promises to garner much posi
tive publicity for our commun
ity’s work for Soviet Jewry, as
well as raise significant dollars.
On behalf of the whole commu
nity, 1 want to thank Joan and
Robert Zimmerman for their
tremendous support of our hu
man rights endeavor,”
mented Mr. Blumenthal.
com-
Entertainment and exhibits of
Israeli art and jewelry will
highlight the evening. Selections
from the largest collection of
contemporary Israeli art in the
U.S. will be showcased including
pieces by such internationally
acclaimed artists as David Shar-
ir and Yaacov Agam. The Col
lector’s Corner Art Gallery from
St. Louis will have for sale works
of more than 40 Israeli artists.

graphs, sculpture, tapestries,
wearable art, and jewelry will be
featured. Owner Ruth Fredman
will also contribute to the local
resettlement effort from sales
proceeds.
Invitations and additional
information will be forthcom
ing, but please mark your ca
lendars now for what will no
doubt be a memorable evening.
Celebrating Succoth at the JCC
Federation B&P Women to Meet
The Charlotte Jewish Feder
ation is sponsoring a Business
and Professional event for all
women. This will be the first of
three programs planned for this
year. The program will be held
at Providence Country Club on
Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m.
The Business and Professional
Cochairs, Phyllis Schiffman and
Susan Gordon, are busy recruit
ing women who are interested in
networking, learning about Jew
ish women’s issues and having
a lot of fun. The goal of Business
and Professionals is to reach a
whole new vital segment of the
Jewish population. Women who
work outside or in addition to
their homes have entirely differ
ent time frames and very diver
gent lifestyles and concerns.
Each has a great deal to offer
the other in terms of talent and
expertise, and, more important,
each is invaluable to the com
munity it ultimately serves.
For more information and to
be on the B&P mailing list,
please call Pam Appelbaum at
the Federation office, 366-5007.

Jewish Book Month “Book & Author” Night Coming in Dec.
By Nancy Blacker &
Lorrie Klemons
One woman’s remarkable sto
ry of survival and achievement
comes to the Charlotte Jewish
community. Judith Magyar
Isaacson, survivor of Auschwitz-
Birkenau and Hessisch-Lichte-
nau, brings her remarkable saga
of poetic courage and basic
instinctive will to survive to the
Fourth Annual Book & Author
Evening,
The author will recount her
experiences at Shalom Park on
Sunday evening, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m.
This event, the highlight of
Jewish Book Month and the
Book Fair at Shalom Park, is
cosponsored by the Charlotte
Chapter of Hadassah, the JCC
and the Speizman Jewish Li
brary. The evening will feature
the author and will be followed
by a Patron’s Reception.
SEED OF SARAH: Memoir
of a Survivor presents “Jutka”
Magyar, a spirited schoolgirl in
Hungary, eagerly looking for
ward to studying comparative
literature at the university when
Hitler and his storm troopers
began their deadly assault on
most of Europe. She was sent
to Auschwitz at the age of 19.
The idyllic world of the au
thor’s childhood died forever in
the nightmare of the Holocaust,
but courage, love and humanity
managed to survive, as evi
denced in the harrowing and
heroic moments that stand out
in the memoir. The book is
illustrated with photographs
hidden in her Hungarian ghetto
home just days before the family
was transported. The story is
remarkable in its absence of
bitterness and simple writing
style and evokes clear images of
joys of life before Nazi occupa
tion, the relentless brutality of
concentration camp existence
