How exciting it was when “The Charlotte Jewish News” was recognized with a Silver Award for “Best Newspaper with Ads” in the 1990 Public Relations Awards'Competition. This makes the 9th award for the “CJN.” The Charlotte Jewish Feder ation received an Honorable Mention for the Charles Goodall Award, for the establishment of the Charlotte Coalition for Soviet Jewry. JCC/Golden Circlc Theatre Fundraiser Gala Slated for Jan. 19 The Jewish Community Cen ter and the Golden Circle Thea tre join together again this year after a successful fundraising effort last year to present the 1991 theatre season. A spectacular gala desert reception Saturday evening, January 19, sandwiched between two performances of the first play. The Good Doctor by Neil Simon, will delight the play goers. The Alvin E. Levine Gymnasium will be transformed into a surprise setting by Ethel Gordon and the committee. Glorious Cuisine of Matthews will provide the delectable as well as luxuriously bountiful desserts. The reception will be open only to benefactors and patrons of this major fundrais ing effort. Four plays are scheduled from January through May in Gorel- ick Hall at Shalom Park. The series represents a mixture of comedy, history and mystery. Playgoers will select the perfor mance dates to suit their calend ars. The Good Doctor by Neil Simon, Jan. 17-27. This play, adapted from a Chekov comedy, is a series of connected vignettes that will keep you smiling. Connie Welsh directs. The Lion in Winter by James Goldman, March 14-24. An anachronistic comedy-drama about the life of Eleanor of Aquitane (French queen and mother of two English kings) and her husband King Henry 11 set in 12th century England. Kathryn Hepburn and Peter OToole made this play famous. Frank Williams directs. Rashomon by Faye and Mi chael Kamin, April 11-21. This play will puzzle the theatre goer. The romantic “whodunit,” set in old Japan, is full of mystery and intrigue. Terry Laughlin directs. Private Live* by Noel Cow ard, May 2-12. It is called by some the ultimate American classic. The protagonists of this high comedy arc a divorccd and remarried couple (not to each other). The events that follow in their lives will delight you. Keith Martin directs. The convention theme, “Remember These Days (...and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every genera tion),” was prevalent throughout the five days. This was the largest GA ever held with 4,000 in attendance (3,100 registered delegates and 900 guests). Plenaries, forums and work shops examined a multitude of See GA page 3 Lubavitch Marks 10th Anniversary With Chanukah Dinner Celebration Lubavitch of North Carolina will celebrate 10 years in Char lotte with a “Grand Chanukah Dinner” event on Sunday, De cember 16, at 6 p.m. at the Charlotte Marriott City Center Hotel. The evening will feature live entertainment: a concert by the popular Eli Lipsker Orchestra and a special musical presenta tion by students of the Lubavitch Day School. “Celebrating a decade of ded icated service to the Carolina Jewish community” is the theme of the dinner. Boris and Bertha Wojnowich will be honored for their constant support to Jewish education. Both Boris and Ber tha miraculously survived the Holocaust and have realized that the guarantee for Jewish survival today is through Jewish educa tion. Rabbi Chaim Gutnick of Mel bourne, Australia will address the celebration. Rabbi Gutnick, an exceptional orator, has served the Australian Jewish community for over 45 years. A giant 12-foot menorah will be kindled to the joyous singing of holiday songs. Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky of Lubavitch World Headquarters will deliver special greetings to the dinner participants. Rabbi Kotlarsky, who has extensive first-hand knowledge of Jewish life all over the world, brings a unique blend of warmth, wit and enthusiasm to his audience.
