That’s because the Men’s Club will direct all of the profits from the sale to the State of Israel. As you’re well aware, Israel faces troubled times both militarily and domestically as it continues to brace against the effects of the Persian Gulf Crisis and immi grants arriving each day. Take this opportunity now to stock up on Kosher wine for Passover and upcoming holi days while making a real con tribution to our families and friends in Israel. To make it easy for you, we’re offering conve nient pickup on Sunday, Mar, 24, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., in the Shalom Park main parking lot. For orders over 6 bottles, we offer free home delivery. Orders must be in immediate ly. For further information call Alan Sussman, 846-6267. When I volunteered to write the monthly articles for the Char lotte Jewish Preschool, I did not want a byline. Since the school is consolidated, both Temples being involved and I am a JCC staff member, my concern was that the school could be thought of as the “JCC Preschool.” 1 have since realized that my concern was really unnecessary. As part of my responsibilities of being a “JCC staffer” 1 take visitors and potential members of the JCC on tours of Shalom Park. They are always im pressed. What’s not to be im pressed? As 1 tell them about the gym and the pools and the racquetball courts, oftentimes the question of a preschool comes up. “Yes,” I say proudly, “we have a wonderful school which operates here. In fact, my two daughters attend.” We then make our way to the education wing and experience the joy and excitement that having the Char lotte Jewish Preschool in the building generates. If I took you on a tour during February, what a treat it would have been. You would have seen the two-year- olds enjoying the wonderful world of pets as they worked on collages and prepared for the pet puppet show. During Dental Health Month they discussed what was good to eat, by explor ing the world of vegetables which included planting their own crop of carrots. The threes learned all about transportation. They made dif ferent kinds of vehicles and created their own train with a conductor and ticket taker and of course a snack vendor. They became Eskimos during one The 2s created a beautiful Tu B*Shcvat mural. Jeanic Katz helped Patti^ thus create beautiful Kiddush cup*. week. Could you imagine a group of three-year-olds parad ing around in mukluks? What a sight! They made Shalach Ma- not baskets for their friends in celebration of Purim, The fours were into the letter “P.” Pet care. Presidents, Purim, Passover, Planting were part of a particularly, plentiful month. The Pre-K class was equally busy. You would have seen them talking about good health hab its. The children are writing words and putting them togeth er, then collecting them in “word boxes.” Acting out the story of Purim was a highlight of the month. Of course visiting the Speiz- man Jewish Library at Shalom Park, a giant Purim parade, the pajama party and Shabbat shar ing with the JCC Chai Group were all enjoyed by all. . CHS “Spotlights” Celia Scher By Sue Brodsky CHS Director I decided to try to fmd out what it is about Celia Scher and her Holocaust courses which cause students to sign up for her classes over and over again. They are even trying to sign up to repeat them when they’ve already taken Holocaust 1, II and 111. Mrs. Scher has been with the CHS since its inception. When asked why she teaches teenagers who are notorious for their misbehavior and disrespect for adults, she answers that the lessons of the Holocaust are the most important that we need to know. It will be the responsibil ity of these students when they go out into the world to teach about the Holocaust. She be lieves that young people absorb more than adults and we need to instill this knowledge at an early age. Mrs. Scher teaches her stu dents that the Holocaust did not end with the liberation of the concentration camps in 1945. “If we don’t learn from it, history has a tendency to repeat itself,” she said. She is constantly on the lookout for television programs which focus on the daily activ ities of the Neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. “These and other groups are against everything we believe as Americans and as Jews,” stated Mrs. Scher. When visiting Mrs. Scher’s class on Wednesday nights, 1 am often faced with students who are engrossed in videotapes of such TV shows as “Phil Donahue,” “Oprah Winfrey,” “Geraldo” and “Sunday Morning.” When asked why she thinks her students love her courses so much, Mrs. Scher replied, “Not Celia Scher only do I stimulate them but 1 want to listen to what they say. 1 respect my students as human beings. I don't talk down to them, I talk with them, and am truly interested in their ideas. Only through talking out what you’re thinking can you channel your thoughts the right way and grasp the world around you.” ilUiEuien JDumral ^enrice, 3nc.
