On Dec. 15, Renee Spatz
spoke before the Leadership
Development group on the topic
of “Effective Communication
Skills.” Renee has been actively
involved in human resource
training and management devel
opment for the past ten years.
She has headed up Evergreen
Training Systems, her own con
sulting company since 1987, and
is a training specialist in the
Charlotte Human Resource De
partment. Renee taught Sunday
school at Temple Beth El V’Sha-
lom and is a former director of
the Consolidated High School of
Jewish Studies.
In the session, we reviewed
various methods of communica
tion and completed a commun
ications inventory to examine
our interpersonal skills on how
we communicate. At one time or
another all of us have been told
that we need to listen more. The
values of good listening, as well
as the importance of active
listening skills such as asking
questions, acknowledging the
speaker, and eye contact, were
emphasized.
Paul Hirschmann and Rick
Willenzik volunteered to lead
the group in a demonstration of
the differences in one-way and
two-way communication. Both

cribed a task in which the group
had to draw a picture consisting
of the linking of a series of
geometric figures. In one exer
cise, the figures were verbally
described, but no questions were
allowed from the group. In a
second exercise, the group could
ask questions, giving the group
and the leader increased confi
dence and feedback regarding
the task.
The group enjoyed the inter
active activities and carried
literature home with them for
future use.
