Georgia — History
Christianity was introduced in
Georgia in 330 CE and despite
a sizable Moslem minority, the
country remains predominantly
Christian. The Georgian lan
guage, one of the Caucasian
group, has an ancient literary
tradition.
The country enjoyed a golden
age in the 12th century, which
ended with the Mongol invasion
in 1220. By the 15th century, the
united monarchy had disinte
grated into squabbling prince
doms under the hegemony alter
nately of Turkey and Persia.
This situation continued until
the 19th century when the area
fell under Russian dominance;
Russian hegemony .prevailed,
with the exception of a short
period of independence in 1918-
21, until the recent disintegra
tion of the USSR.
On April 9, 1991, the then
president of Georgia, Gamsak-
hurdia, declared the country's
independence, and with inde
pendence came the call to dis
band the autonomous regions.
The autonomous region of
South Ossetia had already in
itiated its bid to secede from
Georgia and join the Soviet
Union, and bitter fighting broke
out in January 1991 when Geor
gian militia were sent to quash
secessionists. The situation in
Ossetia is now under control, but
the threat of renewed tensions
remains.
Skhumi, a popular Black Sea
resort for the privileged in the
former USSR, was the center of
conflict during the recent out
break of hostilities in Abkhazia.
Abkhazians have nevertheless
been persistent in their demands
over the years and the recent
strife is seen as part of the
historic conflict between the
secessionist Abkhazians and the
central government in Georgia.
It is generally believed that the
central government will use all
necessary force to maintain a
united Georgia and that seces
sionists in South Ossetia and
Abkhazia are unlikely to relin
quish their aims. Both of these
groups receive support from the
Russian side of the border,
guaranteeing a continuation of
the conflicts.
