BJH Holiday Celebrations Enriched by Charlotte Friends
The Israel Independence Day
celebration at the Blumenthal
Jewish Home was a joyous
occasion thanks to a visit by
Rabbi James Bennett of Temple
Beth El. Rabbi Bennett’s
warmth, good humor and beau
tiful music, interspersed with
comments about both the hol
iday and the music, provided an
entertaining program for the
residents. The audience de
manded, and received, several
encores as well as having special
song requests filled by Rabbi
Bennett, to the delight of the
crowd.
A unique intergenerational
Shabbat took place in the BJH
synagogue on April 16th. The
second grade religious school
class of Temple Israel, led by
their teacher Denise Sussman,
Denise Sussman and the second grade students from Temple Israel religious
school, conduct a creative Shabbat Service in the BJH synagogue for the
residents of the home.
m
conducted their own creative
service for residents, who were
charmed by the students’ enthu
siasm and Jewish knowledge.
During the kiddush following
the service, the young, a*nd
young at heart, had time to share
greetings and meet each other.
Our thanks to Denise Suss
man for imparting her students

One of the most interesting
classes the Adult Jewish Insti
tute offered recently was “Char
lotte’s Jewish History: A Per
spective.” This series explained
in an exceptional manner what
makes Jewish Charlotte tick.
The speakers took partici
pants from Zebulon Vance and
his secret connection with Char
lotte’s Jews, to what it was like
to grow up Jewish in our fair
city and through institutional
development and the creation of
Shalom Park. Stops were made
in between to learn about Harry
Golden, the writer, and the
Jewish Cemetery.
The program was developed
by Richard A. Klein of the
Jewish Historical Society, A
debt of gratitude is owed to
Klein for finding lecturers who
were not only knowledgeable,
but entertaining as well.
Sincere thanks also go to
Mark Bernstein, Hilbert Fuerst-
man, Gail Green, Ben Jaffa, Jr.,
Elizabeth Klein, Walter Klein,
Harry Lerner, Harry Swimmer
and Maurice Weinstein. They
very willing gave up time to
share their experiences on every
aspect of Jewish Charlotte.
Gratitude must also go to
people like Lenora Stein for her
assistance with the series and
Sam Eneman for donating his
time and energy to videotape
each lecture which can now be
found at the CAJA office.
