■#* Page 7-THE NEWS-June/Juty 1994 S E RVICE S WE UNDERSTAND • The needs and pain of a hungry family • The worries of caring for aging parents • The pressures created by job loss, marital difficulties and coping with mental and physical problems • And a multitude of social and economic problems that confront Jews every day in our Charlotte community The 1994-95 JFS ANNUAL FRIENDS CAMPAIGN is underway. We need your support if we are to continue providing the programs and services at levels that meet the needs of the Charlotte Jewish community. In 1993 our organization had 1784 direct contacts with individuals through office and home visits as well as a large number of information and referral requests. The needs will be even greater this year. On behalf of the people who benefit from these services JFS provides, I appeal to you for your generous contribution, so our excellent work can continue. Please mail your tax deductible contribution in the envelope provided as soon as you receive your letter from JFS. Thank you. We helped these families by setting up apartments, arranging for English and driving lessons, helping people find jobs, arrang ing for medical and dental appointments and generally helping them to become self- sufficient at the end of four months. Little did I know what an enormous and demanding job this would be for JFS and all its staff. At the same time, never could I have imagined the sat isfaction to be derived from helping people go from erne point to another. I saw people go from dependency and confu sion about our very different American ways and culture. 1 saw people who realized what it meant to be Jewish and watched them find success in employment and becoming a contributing part of the Jewish and broader community. I truly have been humbled (and yes, sometimes overwhelmed) by the people we helped to resettle! During a four year period, 1990-1994, JFS resettled 43 families for a total of 167 per sons. The resettlement program is now closed, but JFS will continue to offer outreach to any Russian Jew in Charlotte who needs our help. It’s no secret that the U.S. State Department and HU AS were upset that we had to close the program. While Charlotte achieved 100% of the mandated goals, the average around the country was 65% self-sufficiency and integration. Although we no longer have funds for direct assistance, we are committed to provide help in upgrading jobs by improving English skills, and to help people become part of the Jewish com munity or resolve other prob lems that arise. Other communities will reset tle new Russian Jews as they continue to join family members here. Those coming to Charlotte will be sponsored by Catholic Social Services. The JFS staff could not have done this program alone! It took many people to provide needed rides and who visited and extended their per sonal assistance or professional expertise as translators. Others prepared resumes, hosted fam ilies, or gave furniture and other household goods. Still others picked up or moved furniture, tutored, went grocery shopping and gave of themselves and their time. We are also deeply grateful to the doctors, dentists and hospitals who donated their services. Thanks also go to Jewish educators, rabbis and presenters who informed people about jobs and insurance. Final ly, 1 want to thank the JCC and both temples for free member ships and camp and religious schools for the first year. 1993 JFS Budget Friends Campaign 21% $33,000 Resettlement Reimbursement 7% $10,745 Contributions 2% $3,000 Fees for Service 6.5% $9,900 With Deedee Daumit...Your Home ... as Good as 3old!
