A Birthday Passes Frankfurt, Germany, in mid-June, paid homage to a young city native who earned posthumous renown for the account, in her diary, of Jewish life under the Nazis. The young girl was Anne Frank and this year she would have celebrated her 65th birthday. News According to the 1993 annual report by the Health Department of the Interna tional Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, health care in Russia and the other repub lics of the former Soviet union is "seriously ill." The report predicts the overall situation is likely only to get worse in the short run. A hoard of 4,000 ancient coins was discovered several yards off Haifa's shoreline, one of the largest and most valuable finds anywhere in the country. The "tetradrachma," minted on the Greek island of Pathos in 145 BCE, were each worth the equivalent of $133. One-fourth of that amount was paid daily to a soldier of that time. Archeologists believe the money was being transported from Egypt on a boat which sank in a storm. France has convicted Nazi collaborator Paul Touvier, viewed as a signal that the country may finally be ready to confront its wartime past. Touvier is the first Frenchman to be convicted of crimes against humanity. Anne Frank In conjunction with the celebration of Frank’s birth day, students from eight Frankfurt schools participated in a hunt for traces of the Frank family’s residence in the Dombusch section of the city. The family left Frankfurt in 1933, shortly after Hitler came to power, and settled in Amsterdam. Frank’s diary recounted the two years the family spent in hiding before being discovered and turned over to Nazi authorities. Congregation Bais Ball Letters to the Editor USA 29t If Lubavitch Loses, We All Lose If this letter reads like an appeal for support of the Jewish Day School of Charlotte, then I have not effectively presented my case. Because the truth is that our support of a Lubavitch- initiated project for a day school is not limited to the construc tion of a building on Sardis Road. It goes much deeper than that. It is really about Jewish education and why it is so very important for our .children’s sake and for the future of Chariotte’s Jewish community. Our history has proven, time after time, that for Judaism to survive, there must be the transmission of Torah principles. For Judaism to thrive, there must be substance to it, so that it can grow, expand and attract. Such substance comes from the Torah, the heart and soul of our religion. Never has its teach ings been more necessary than now, given our current societal climate of pervasive sexuality and violence. Our young people are constantly being bombarded with messages which desensi tize them to a higher form of love and obedience. Strong Jewish education is our answer to such moral degeneration, not only to stem the tide, but to help lead the world toward spiritual transformation. Ira Chase-Charlotte Discovering Comets—A Work In Progress David Levy of Tucson, Arizona, is a 45 year old amateur astronomer. He has 19 comets named after him as discoverer or co-disoverer .The 19th comet now is known as Shoemaker- Levy 9, following the custom of naming comets after their discoverers. It's believed that Levy will win the world’s title as having more comets named after him. The record is held by Jean Louis Pons, a Frenchman with a total of 26 comets named after him. Levy discovered his first comet in 1984 and does his comet hunting both in his backyard, some 30 miles southeast of Tucson, and at Mt. Polamar, in California. One of his comets slammed into Jupiter late last month. sgatior^^^P Behmd home plate m a room accorded them at Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles, as many as 40 or more Jews ignore the action on the field and the cheering of the crowds for regular mincha and ma'ariv afternoon prayers. Services are hosted in the organization's office and supply room. The idea for the services came to two Jewish men who were attending the game and needed to recite the kaddish prayer.
