The Jewish Day School
by Lynda Headley
CommMni/ies.Soundsdidl? Not
in the third grade class at The Jew
ish DaySchool. After talking about
communities for a few days, Lynda
Headley's third graders realize tiie
importance of meeting the needs of
oonununity members. They know
that all people need food, shelter
and clothing. In addition, they
need to be safe and to be kept
healthy. With this basic informa
tion in mind, they begin their So
cial Studies "game."
Max decides thathe would like
to be Mayor and head the dty gov
ernment Paul wants to be tiie jailer
and work part-time as a basketball
coach. David chooses to be a doc
tor in the community. Michael is
in construction and builds quality
homes (he also owns some jewelry
stores). Sheinaownsa party goods
shop that also sells kosher food and
snacks. Courtney owns a combina
tion fixxi and dotiiing store. Tracy
works at a dance studio and also
works part-timeatthebank. Karen
works for the water company and
is an excellent plumber.

children starting school. They need
school clothes and food to make
lunches. Who will help Karen with
her needs? Courtney, of course!
She owns the food and clothing
store. Courtney has been having a
problem at her store with people
littering. She has tried to find a
solution on her own, but finally
decides she needs help from the
dty. She goes to see Max and they
work out a plan together to solve
her problem. After a busy day
downtown, MaycrMaxheadshane
to find that his water pipes have
broken and his house is beginning
toflood! Whocanheiphim? Karen
comes to the rescue.
In the meantime, Tracy has
been working so hard and forsudi
long hours that she has not been
taking very good careofhersdf. 9ie
feels terrible! What should she do?
Go to see Dr. David. He tells her
tosbw down, hire someme tohdp
at the dance studio and get more
nest
On his way home, David re
members that it is his sister's birth-
day next week. He needs some assis
tance with party plans. It'sSheina's
turn to assist. She helps David se
lect party favors and some great
snacks. Sheina's business is doing
so well that she needs to expand.
She deddes tiiat she has to build an
addition to her store. What does
she do first? She goes
to see
Tracy at the bank to talk about a
loan. Next she visits Michael to see
if he can help her plan and then
build her addition. Michael is happy
to help.
Meanwhile, Michael has been
having some problems with lumber
being taken from his construction
sites. He reported the problem and
the police already have a person in
jail. Michael goes to visit his friend,
Paul, and together they try to de-
dde if Michael should give the thief
(one ofhisworkers)asecond chance.
Michael has had a tough day and
thinks he needs to have a little fun
(another need people have). Paul
suggests that he come to the basket
ball game that evening. Great idea!
The following day Paul visits
Michael at his jewelry store to buy
an anniversary gift. Michael makea
good suggesticn and Paul leaves with
a perfect gift.
Mrs. Headl^s mind is grinning
by this time. Coming up with situ
ations for each child is challenging.
The children gladly come up with
other ideas. After 45 minutes the
children have learned how much
people dep>end on each other in a
community. They also realize that
eveiyoneshares their knowledge with
one another and that life in a com
munity is easier when all work to
gether.
