Michael Isaacson, founder and music director of The Israel
Pops and conductor of The Hollywood Pops will be the guest
conductor of The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Isaacson's
creative genius will take his audience on a music tour of Jewish
music heard throughout the world.
Under the baton of Dr. Isaacson, The Israel Pops performed with
Joel Grey at The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles.
Last year Isaacson and The Israel Pops received rave reviews
when they performed at Madison Square Garden for New York's
gala Chanukah celebration. Plans are now underway for a South
American tour in 1995.
Isaacson's original scores of Rich Man, Poor Man II, Hawaii
Five-O, Bionic Women, and Days of Our Lives along with
numerous collaborations in motion pictures for television has
brought him much acclaim.

1995 JCC GALA TO HONOR
BILL GORELICK AND
HARRY SWIMMER
"The Heart Of The J Beats On,,,
From Generation To Generation"
V^th this theme, the Jewish Community Center will pay spe
cial tribute to two of our most visionary and dedicated commu
nity leaders. Bill Gorelick and Harry Swimmer, at its annual Gala,
to be held on February 4,1995 at the Adams Mark Hotel.
Spearheaded by event co-chairpersons Jill Newman and Lori
Wojnowich, the Gala Committee's plans are in high gear. "The
only place to be on the fourth of February will be the JCC Gala"
says Wojnowich. "Ticket buyers will be supporting the JCC and
will be treated to a fantastic and delightful evening." Newman
promises, "We're elevating the event to a new level this year. It
will be a truly memorable evening." Gala attendees will enjoy taste
fully prepared food and an elegant night out while being enter
tained by the popular band Northtower. Everyone can expect a
few fun-filled surprises, too!
Funds from the 1995 Gala will help support the social and
educational services provided by the Jewish Community Center.
This includes invaluable programs such as the kosher nutrition
program for older adults, day
camp scholarships, transporta
tion services for the frail elderly,
special services for children wi^
ji^ysical and learning challenges,
support programs for single par
ent families, membership schol
arships, Jewish identity building
and enrichment experiences, in
fant day care and after-school
care. Wojnowich warns, "we are
in jeopardy of losing some of
these important services. We are
Harry Swimmer lacking the appropriate funding
to provide what's in existence and to plan needed new services. It
is our responsibility to ensure the Jewish Community Center's
future for our children and the coming generations!"
Newman recounts that the notion of honoring Gorelick and
Swimmer was warmly and unanimously endorsed because, "It
was Harry and Bill's foresight, commitment and energy that pro
vided the leadership needed to turn our community's dream into
a tangible reality. Without them the Jewish Community Center
building could not have been built."
As chairman of the Jewish Community Center Building Com
mittee, Gorelick dedicated himself unselfishly to on-site supervi
sion of the design and construction phases of the project. He
continues to play an active role as primary consultant on building
maintenance and facility up
grades. Wojnowich reiterates
that, "We are quite fortunate to
be the recipients of Bill's stead
fast commitment to the commu
nity."

A Question Worth
Repeating-
Answers Worth

by Dan Lepow-Executive Director
Jewish Federation of
Greater Charlotte
Last month I asked the
question, why so many people
gave of their time to help raise
funds for the Federation's an
nual community campaign. An
swers from several volunteers
appear inside this issue of the
CJN and as space permits, we
will continue to print answers
from other volunteers.
More than 1,800 people
made a contribution last year
and I think that's terrific. Much
of the credit goes to the solici
tors, however, everyone who
answered the call and made a
gift needs to be personally
thanked. How have we ben
efited as individuals and as a
community?
While the Federation con
ducts the fund drive, only a
small percentage stays with the
Federation. Approximately 10 -
11% of the funds raised is spent
to conduct the drive. Remem
ber, the success of the annual
appeal is that we must reach
every Jewish person in the
Charlotte area. With estimates
as high as 9,000' this is no mean
feat. Another 11% is used for
community development pro
grams. What is a community
development program? Activi
ties that help our community
communicate with each other
such as the CJN, Shalom Y'all
(welcoming newcomers), and
Leadership Development (pre
paring for tomorrow) are all
