Page 16 • The New • December, 1994 i! jj! ll The Jewish Community Center jg jf MACCABi Charlotte Jewish Singles YOUTH GAMES UPDATE David Van Glish and Lane Ostrow attended the Youth Maccabi Games in August and as a result, the JCC’s new Maccabi Youth Committee was formed with David & Lane as cochairs. This committee is planning to send a delegation to the upcoming Youth Games in Orlando, Florida, August 13 through August 17, 1995. The special experience felt by all the Jewish athletes attending this one week event of athletic, social and Jewish cultural events, is unforgettable. The youth games are held yearly, alternating be tween regional and national com petition. They are a function of the National Jewish Community Cen ter movement and are an offspring of the World Maccabiah Games - the premier Jewish athletic event which occurs every four years in Israel. The mission is clear! A group of 20 - 30 Jewish youth between the ages of 12 and J6 will be se lected from Charlotte and its sur rounding areas to play on one of the numerous teams or individual sports including basketball, soccer, racquetball, golf, swimming, ten nis, softball and even bowling. Those athletes interested in partici pating in any sporting event should contact Millie Campbell at the JCC (366-5007). Based on this re sponse, the committee will decide which teams and individual sports to sponsor. JCC Sends Out Call For Young Jewish Athletes W1 The Jewish Community of Charlotte is planning to send a del egation of young Jewish athletes, ages 12 - 16 to the upcoming re gional Youth Maccabi Games in Orlando, Florida, August 13 through August 17, 1995. Picture this! Two thousand, five hundred Jewish teenagers from over 68 different communi ties in the United States and seven in Canada, as well as from other countries, such as Mexico, Austra lia, Great Britain, and Israel, gath ering together for a week. What were they doing? They had par ticipated in the recently held 1994 Continental Jewish Community Centers Maccabi Youth Games! The Games are an Olympic- style event featuring athletic com petition for boys and girls in more than 12- different sports, includ ing basketball, bowling golf, gym nastic, soccer, softball, swinmiing, tennis, table tennis, track & field, volleyball and wrestling. The JCC Maccabi Youth Games provide the opportunity not only for healthy competition among young athletes, but fcM* an unforgettable experience of pride in being Jewish. Events designed to enhance the young participants’ Jewish identity included a memo- WAivr YOU! Israeli team that v^as so U'agically slain during the 1972 Olympics. This year’s Games also featured a special tzedakah project, inviting each participant to donate a small amount of money towards the planting of a JCC Maccabi Youth Games Grove in Modi’ in Israel.
