Jan. 30 - Roast Turkey Camp Barney Medintz Open House Camp Barney Medintz, summer resident camp of The Atlanta Jewish Commu nity Center, will offer an exciting presentation in Charlotte on Wednesday, January 25, 1995 at 7:00 P.M. at the Charlotte Jewish Community Center. Jim Mittenthal, M.S.W., Camp Director, will meet with new and returning families and show the camp’s new media production, answer ques tions pertaining to the 1995 summer season, and provide applications for registration. Camp Barney Medintz is located in the North Georgia Appalachian Moun tains on over 5(X) acres of forests, lakes and streams - just 75 miles from Atlanta. The magnificent setting facilitates dozens of excit ing and unusual activities including: water-skiing, sailing, canoeing, leaping off of “The Blob,” horse back riding, campouts, whitewater rafting, tubing, theater, tennis, all land/court sports, video-graphy, crafts, music Israeli culture, mountain biking, swimming in the Olympic-size pool, and a series of high- adventure rock climbing, rappelling and ropes courses. Camp Barney Medintz is about adventure and discovery, great activities and exciting events, teach ing and leaming, Jewish traditions and special friends. Inquiries about our 1995 summer are far ex ceeding previous years and each of the two and four- week sessions are likely to fill to capacity by early Spring. Comparative Religions The response to the first two seminars on comparative religions was extremely well received by the community at large. The course, designed by Jeffrey F. Meyer, Chair of the Department of Reli gious Studies, draws on the excel lent UNCC Religious Studies faculty. Jeff Meyer will be the lecturer for all four classes in the third seminar. Jeff received his Ph.D from the University of Chicago in 1973, in the history of religions, and has been teaching at UNC Charlotte since that time. His spe cial interests in teaching and re search have been in Chinese and East Asian religion and culture. He has lived in Taiwan and China for over two years, most recently spending 6 months in Baoding (Charlotte’s sister city near Beijing) studying the teaching of morality in Chinese elementary and secondary schools. He has published books and articles on various aspects of Chinese religion and culture. In 1990 he and his wife adopted a Chinese child which he calls his most important Asian project. Jeff lectured on Catholicism during the first series and was a captivating speaker. The third seminar will cover the religions of East Asia. The Chinese Religions of Taoism, Con fucianism, and Chinese Buddhism, as well as Shinto, Zen and Pure Land religions will be discussed. The last evening will explore methods of meditation so make sure to wear comfortable clothing. The fourth seminar will cover contemporary issues in religion. It will cover everything from Reli gion and women’s issues to Reli gion, race and ethnicity. The specific topics will be announce at a later date. All classes will, again be on Thursdays. Seminar three will be held on February 16th & 23rd, and March 2nd and 9th. The fourth seminar will be held March 23rd and 30th, and April 6th and 13th. Cost per four week seminar will be $25.00. Spring Art Classes This Spring an exciting new class will be offered in printmaking. This is an age-old technique which can be use to make modem masterpieces. You will be able to create cards and sta tionary, pictures, T-shirts, and even stencils to decorate your home. The class will be taught by Natalie Beckert, an extremely talented lo cal artist, who has taught at CPCC and Spirit Square. Our ceramics classes will, once again, be staffed by Jim Whalen, a very talented profes sional potter. Jim has sparked new interest in ceramics at the 'J” by allowing students to experiment with alternative firing methods, including Raku, and encouraging people to try new methods of working with the clay. Classes are held on Monday and Tuesday nights as well as on Tuesday af ternoons. Stop in and try one class, and watch how much fun his stu dents have while making beauti ful and unusual pottery. Even if you’ve never worked with clay before, Jim will make you feel like an artist in no time. You can also develop your creative side by taking a painting class with Mary Todd Shaw. You will leam to draw as well as work with pastels, watercolors, and even oil paints. She give lots of indi vidual attention, so no matter how inexperienced you are, she will make your talent shine through.
