Speizman Jewish
Library users are
rewarded by the
efforts of Library
volunteers Leon and
Flora Beneviste.
Those smartly recov
ered books are the
handiwork of Leon
Beneviste, who has
earned the name “The
Book Doctor.” As his
wife, Flora, explained,
“When a book is
broken, he fixes it.”
Flora and Leon
Beneviste are a retired
couple, who came to
Charlotte seven years
ago to be near their
son, Sam. They’ve
been volunteering for
the Speizman Jewish
Library ever since
they arrived. Alpha
betizing and stamping
books, pasting in the
date cards, re-shelving
books —“Whatever
they give us, we do,”
Flora says. Librarian
Amalia War^enbrot
points out,” They
know the"routine so
well, that they work
independently.”
The Benevistes
came to the United
States in 1951 from
Salonika, Greece.
Survivors of
Bergen-Belsen
Concentration
Camp, they were
liberated by Ameri
can soldiers and
were thrilled to be
able to come to the
U.S. - ‘The best
country in the
world.” They settled
in Syracuse, New
York, where they
lived for thirty-four years.
They tried retiring in Myrtle
Beach, “But there wasn’t
enough to do,” Flora com
mented. They followed son
Sam to Charlotte, which
Flora describes, as a “Beau
tiful, friendly city.” In
addition to Sam, the
Benevistes have two other
grown children - Emma
Goodman, in Syracuse,New
York and Dinah Cohen,
who lives with husband
Mark in Washington, D.C.
Rora, who speaks five
languages, expressed her
deep appreciation to Julius
Goldman, who drives them
to the Library, and to Jeanne
Rees, Elkie and Stan
T\ilman, George and
Verna Sheldon and Bob
Jacobson who take
turns driving the
Benevistes to Temple
Israel for Shabbat
Services. “And don’t
forget to mention Sam,”
Flora continued. “He
takes such good care of '
us and helps us with
our daily activities.”
Thank YOU, Flora
and Leon Beneviste, for
being such spirited,
dedicated and compe
tent Speizman Jewish
Library volunteers.
