The Nbws - August, 1995 - Page 3 Our Relationship With The Republican Party by Michael Weinberger Everyone knows that many Evangelical Christians have be come involved with the Republi can Party in the past few years. Some people credit them with pro viding many of the foot soldiers that propelled the Republican Party to victory last November. What may be less known, how ever, is the role of Jewish Conser vatives in the Republican Party. Such a role exists and the Repub lican party is reaching out to all Americans to participate in its Conservative Revolution. Our party believes in inclu siveness. At a recent Republican Party Executive Board meeting I attended, extensive plans were made to reach citizens in every single voting precinct in Mecklenburg County. The black precincts were included as well, and, in fact, I had an extensive dis cussion with a black board mem ber about the rise of young conservatives in his community. Linda Daves, our party’s chairman, is a remarkable woman who understands how to build bridges and coalitions. She also understands the political need for alliances if the conservative cause is going to advance. This cause, in my view, should be supported by Jewish voters. Liberal social policies have been tried in many parts of the country which only resulted in chaos and lawlessness. New York, Detroit, Newark and other major American cities which have been dominated by liberals are crum bling. People are fleeing them. Their economic bases are evaporat ing. Property values are falling and the social fabric is unraveling. Michael Weinberger Compare these communities with others that have a conserva tive social philosophy. By this I mean a philosophy which empha sizes a moral code, holds individu als responsible for their own actions, encourages hard work ver sus welfare and enforces law. Many Southern communities have these values and they are booming. Businesses are moving there. People want to live there. Although random acts of violence may be encountered, you may note that calm prevailed here while Los Angeles burned. Many young Jewish voters are beginning to understand this. They are becoming more and more con servative and more active in the Republican Party. Dan Quale’s main advisor was Bill Kristol. President Bush had John Podhoretz as his speech writer. When I lived in New York, and was President of the New York Chapter of the Federalist Society (the counterpart to the ACLU), several members of the Board of Directors were Jewish. One mem ber, Andy Cowen, later became Republican Minority Counsel to the House Judiciary Committee. Another, Dennis Jacobs, is now a judge on the United States Court of Appeals. That is right below the Supreme Court. Young Jews should realize that conservatism is the wave of the future. Liberalism has failed. Politically speaking, that means Republicanism is on the rise. This is especially so in the South, where a number of Democratic elected officials have recently switched to the Republican Party. I invite conservatives, or any voters who are opposed to big gov ernment, to call me with any ques tions they have about the Republican Party. My number is 362-1223. Michael Weinberger is a mem ber of the Executive Board of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Republi can Party. Israel Hangs Out A ‘Help Wanted’ Sign By Elmer L. Winter, Chair- man-Committee for Eco nomic Growth of Israel Here is surprising news: Israel is short of engineers and scientists and is looking to recruit person nel in America. The country that formerly had a superabundance of skilled personnel in search of jobs now has to import help. What has happened? An ex pansion of Israel’s high-tech sec tor has created a need for a large number of engineers and scien tists. Previously, highly-trained Israelis sought jobs in the United States because of the Israeli job shortage. There was considerable concern that this was producing a “brain drain,” and Israel would lose some of its best and brightest technological and scientific per sonnel. Now, some Israelis are re turning to Israel because U.S. firms are downsizing, creating a shortage of technical jobs, while Israel’s high tech companies are expanding. Today, there are an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 unfilled job open ings for engineers and scientists in Israel. The peace process has been a trigger in creating Israel’s eco nomic explosion, resulting in the opening of new markets and en couraging new investment from abroad. The idea of an economic aliyah may im)ve to be a win-win concept whose time has come. ^eitovn HasSupplies ForM CeiebiatioQs Luaus Showers Birthdays All Parties PAPERTOWN! 342-5815 M-F, 9-6; Sat, 9-5 4420 Monroe Rd.
