Federation Announces Staff Appointments
Louis Wernick

lotte. announced two Federation
staff appointments:Louis Wernick
to the position of Director of Spe
cial Projects; Vicki Hopkins to the
position of Program Associate
Lou joins the Federation with
almost 40 years in the fields of Jew
ish communal service and
fundraising. He began his career
with the United Jewish Appeal
working from national headquar
ters in New York. Lou’s responsi
bilities included the planning,
organization and implementation of
development and fund raising pro
grams in major, intermediate and
smaller communities throughout
the United States.
After 30 years of travelling and
consulting to a variety of commu
nities, Lou was recruited by Cedars
- Sinai Medical Center in Los.An
geles, Ca. as Director of Develop
ment. His achievments included
major capital development pro
grams, grantsmanship, planned giv
ing projects and special events.
Lou then served as Executive
Vice-President of the Santa Marta
Hospital Foundation. As the Chief
Executive Officer of the founda
tion, which serves as the
fundraising and public relations
arm for Santa Marta Hospital In Los
Ange/es, Lou was charged with
developing an organizational struc-

ture for the Foundation along with
primary responsibilities for
fundraising, media and public re
lations.
Lou and his wife. Pearl, relo
cated to Charlotte two years ago.
Rich Osbome said, “we are indeed
fortunate to have someone with
Lou’s experience and expertise in
our community and feel certain that
he will make a significant contri
bution to the Jewish Federation in
the areas of his responsibilities
dealing with the formation and
functioning of affinity groups such
as lawyers, physicians/dentists and
financial divisions of the Federa
tion.”

and couples to interact together in
a fun Jewish atmosphere,” says
Debra Van Glish, one of the four
co-chairs, “and drawing upon the
successes of the past two years, we
anticipate a large crowd for the
third annual New Federation Gen
eration event.”

Vicki Hopkins
Vicki rejoins the Federation
staff after a six year hiatus. Vicki
has an extensive background in
programming events and
fundraising. Most recently, Vicki
was the Cultural Endowment Cam
paign Research Associate for the
Arts and Science Council. In this
position, she researched potential
donors and strategies for the highly
successful $25 million endowment
campaign.
For over nine years, Vicki has
been a freelance Research Associ
ate for the Charlotte Chamber of
Commerce. Organizing and re
searching information on commu
nity leaders, businesses and
foundations for fundraising events,
she also provided information
about Charlotte to the public.
Vicki has led a very active vol
unteer life including past president
of B’nai B’rith Women, the Men
tal Health Association of
Mecklenburg County, past Chair
man of the Mecklenburg County
Human Services Council and Com
munity Child Protection Team. She
has also served on the Boards of
United Way of Central Carolinas,
B’na’ B’rith Women, the Jewish
Community Center and the Jewish
Federation.
With this impressive back
ground, Vicki will be responsible
for the Women’s Division Business
and Professionals Group, the New
Federation Generation (Young
Adults) and recruitment for the
UJA Young Leadership Washing
ton Conference, the Uptowners and
Shalom Y’all Committee.

We ran seconds before a shell hit our street. It was terrifying.
At Sarajevo's Jewish Center, we were put on a bus. Somehow,
we made it through all the checkpoints and the Jewish Agency
people got us on a flight to Israel. Were safe now and we're
together But I am worried sick about those who are still there.
