17 Years of
Bringing
Yiddish to
the Heights
The natural splendors of the
Blue Ridge Parkway serve as a
gateway to Wildacres (in Yiddish
it’s VildeAccem), a mountaintop
retreat established by the
Blumenthal Foundation as a non
profit conference center for the
betterment of human relations. For
those attending the Charlotte Yid
dish Institute from August 17 to 20,
this environment served as an apt
background for the culturally and
spiritually uplifting weekend that
lay ahead. Yiddish was the moti
vating force of the four-day Insti
tute, bringing together devoted
Yiddishists, many of whom trav
eled great distances. The pace never
slackened, the riches of “mame
loshn” spilling over into every facet
of the Institute’s full schedule.
Guest lecturer Ruth Barlas, with
warmth and charm, gave fascinat
ing presentations (in both Yiddish
and English) of her subject matter,
“Tevye ‘5 Daughters, Precursors of
our Time,” “Jewish Idealism and
Yiddish Poetry” and “Trauma and
Drama on the Yiddish Stage." Ms
Barlas will be chairing the Third
International Conference of Yid
dish Clubs & Friends of Yiddish
March 1 - 4,1996 in Miami Beach,
Florida. The conference will offer
a variety of seminars on Yiddish
Language, literature, music, song
and humor. There will also be a
Saturday evening concert and a
Sunday evening cabaret featuring
Klezmer music and other entertain
ment. Keynote speaker Aaron
Kansky’s topic is “Yiddish in the
21st Century.” For more informa
tion about the conference call

The artists-in-residence,
Zalmen Mlotek and Robert
Abelson, presented concerts rich in
the Yiddish repertoire, with stand
ing ovations calling them back for
encore after encore. An added
high-light to the concerts was
Avrom Mlotek, Zalmen’s 8 year
old son who shares his father’s
musical talent. With equal dexter
ity both in Yiddish and English, he
brought down the house soloing
and dueting with his father and
Robert Abelson, two of the lead
ing performers on the Yiddish mu
sical stage today.
Workshops were another as
pect of the Institute, where
Institutnikes could attend Yiddish
language classes (from beginners to
advanced) and listen to Reuven
Freedman present his theme of
“Nature in Yiddish Songs and Po
etry.” Religious services are an
intrical part of the Institute,
where prayers are chanted in Yid
dish, Hebrew and English and par
ticipation is another enriching facet
of the Institute.
And the well known hospital
ity and nightly songfests of the In
stitute permeates throughout with
late night “noshing” Shabbas
kiddush and impromptu talent
nights. The continued success of
the Charlotte Yiddish Institute, this
our 17th year, stems from the com
bined talents and devoted efforts of
a dedicated committee whose mem
bers are: Sarah and Gedalia
Ackerman, Sarah Mushe and
Yehudah Goldman, Raizl and
Abraham Luski, Liebe Pollard,
Baila and Yayneh Pransky, Elkie
and Zalmen Tulman and Shmuel
Wallace, (Moishe Bienstock was
not available this year). A deep
sense of thankfulness goes out to
them all along with added appre
ciation to those attendees who also
contributed to its success: Eleazer
Goldin, Benyamin Rudow, Reuven
Freedman, Rabbi Lazer Hoffman
and Cantor Martha Novick.
The Institute is grateful for the
Blumenthal Family’s wholehearted
cooperation and encouragement in
advancing the goals of the Yiddish
Institute.
At the close of the Institute, as
has been true of so many previous
ones, there was a reluctance to part
this rarefied Yiddish experience
seldom found in our daily lives.
But there were signs of continuity
amongst the departing Institutnikes.
Plans were being formulated to
found classes in the Yiddish lan
guage, bring Yiddish performers to
their cities, create their own Yid
dish VinkI and share with others the
spirit and flavor of the Charlotte
Yiddish Institute.
