The Charlotte Jewish News - Octot>er, 1995 - Page 9 olunte of the Month hift Silvw This column features a volunteer from one of the many groups, agencies or organizations that add to the qual ity of life in the Charlotte Jewish community. Hushie Silverstein: A Week-Long Volunteer! “I don’t play cards ... I vol unteer. That’s what I love to do. I don’t like to stay home.” That’s how this month’s volunteer of the month, Hushie Silverstein, ex plains why she is such an active volunteer. Hushie has a six-day a week schedule of volunteering: SUNDAY - Gift Shop at Temple Israel. Hushie opens the gift shop each Sunday morning and cheerfully provides sales as sistance to customers. MONDAY - Senior hot lunch program at the JCC for the Chai group. “We serve twenty to twenty-five customers. I’m a glo rified waitress and a sometimes- cook’s assistant,” says Hushie. TUESDAY - Morrison Re gional Library. Hushie helps shelve books and works at what ever is needed. “Libraries are underfunded and need volun teers,” Hushie points out. WEDNESDAY and FRI DAY » Driver for those who need transportation to doctors’ and dentists’ appointments and shop ping for both the Jewish Family Services and The Shepherd Cen ter. (The Shepherd Center is funded by churches and syna gogues in the Charlotte area.) THURSDAY - Performing Arts Center in uptown Charlotte. Hushie helps the staff in the mar keting and development depart ment. SATURDAY - The Sabbath is, of course a day of rest. Hushie attends services at Temple Israel. Hushie moved to Charlotte fifty-four years ago, when she married her late husband Isadore Silverstein, a native Charlottean. Hushie explained that the Silverstein family was one of the first Jewish families to settle in Charlotte. Her two children are Robyn Van Dresser and Gary Silverstein. She is proud of her two grown grandchildren Kara and Scott Silverstein, who are third generation Charlotteans. Hushie's active volunteer schedule placed her on the lists of “Volunteer of the Month” for both the Jewish Family Services and the JCC. “Every city needs vol unteers and couldn’t exist without them. Everyone who is able should, volunteer in some capac ity,” Hushie said in closing the interview. Those are wise words, Hushie, and the city of Charlotte is all the more richer because of your volunteer activities!
