Im Tirzu — Doris H. Goldstein How often have we heard these famous words of Theodore Herzl, “If you will it, it is not a dream,” quoted at Jewish events? It was heard once again on Memorial Day, May 27, 1996, in an unlikely setting, the lush rolling countryside of Rabun County, Georgia, just a few miles from the North Carolina state line. Rabbi Shalom Lewis of Congregation Etz Chaim in Marietta, along with 24 rabbis from throughout the South, led 700 Southern Jews in the chanting of Hallel and the Sh’checheyanu as Ramah Darom was dedicated. Ramah Darom is the newest Jewish camp to be built in several years and the first Ramah camp to be built in the South. When the first campers inaugurate Ramah Darom in the summer of 1997, Ramah will mark its 50th anniver sary. Camp Ramah was founded by the Conservative Movement in 1947 and now sponsors programs throughout the United States, Canada, Israel and Russia. In keeping with the Ramah tradition, Ramah Darom will serve not only as a summer camp for children, but will also function as a teacher’s institute and will ultimately serve as a year-round, kosher retreat facility suitable for use by members of all Jewish communities in the South. It will be a perfect site for inspiration and Jewish renewal. The hallmarks of any sum mer camping experience include fun, new experiences, forming friendships and learning to live within the camp community framework. Ramah embodies all of these and more. The Ramah experience incorporates Judaism into a 24-hour agenda including prayer, study, use of modern Hebrew and living in a communi ty guided by Jewish thought and values. In the late 1950’s, Sol Singer and other Southern Jews peti tioned the National Ramah Commission to open a camp in the CAROLINA MARKING DEVICES, INC. P.O. BOX 32143 3405 S. TRYON STREET CHARLOTTE, NC 28232-2143 TEL. (704) 525-7600 FAX (800) 777-8619 Rubber Stamps, Notary and Corporate Seals, Laundry markers, Stenciling Supplies SAME DAY SERVICE South. The response was that nei ther the population of the area nor the finances of the Commission warranted such an effort. As a result, children from the South attended Ramah camps in Wisconsin and the Northeast. Due to both distance and expense, the numbers of Southern Jewish chil dren reaping the benefits of the Ramah experience were limited. Now, forty years later, the dream of one generation has been brought to fruition by the next. Under the leadership of Ramah alumnus Eric Singer, son of Sol and Ruth Singer, the dream of Ramah Darom has become a real ity. With the cooperation of lead ers from throughout the South, and the combined efforts‘of vol unteers from the Jewish Theological Seminary, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, the Rabbinical Assembly and the National Ramah Commission, Dedication of Ramah Darom. Ramah Darom committees in both large and small communities were mobilized to raise the funds need ed to purchase the site. A 122-acre tract of the most beautiful and inspiring countryside near Clayton. Georgia is now the mag nificent home of Ramah Darom. To date, $3.5 million of the initial goal of $5 million has been raised.
