CHS Focuses on
Respect for 1996-97
by Sue Brodsky, Director
September is in tlie air,
bringing new students, new
classes, new beginnings and a
new year. Imagine that you can
see the magic box I am holding
in my hands. It is very beautiful
and very special, and it can con
tain anything we want. I would
like for each student, teacher and
parent at the Consolidated High
School of Jewish Studies to
imagine that he or she can put
one thing into my magic box—
one thing that would enable us to
have the best year we’ve ever
had.
Into the magic box, I would
put the formula for respect. In
order for us to have the best year
possible, we have many things in
place—a wonderful faculty,
interesting courses, and students
and teachers who enjoy the com-
raderie of being together for
learning and sharing. If we add
respect what an incredible school
we would have! Teachers need to
respect students, students need to
respect their fellow students and
their teachers, all of us need to
respect each other’s religious dif
ferences, and we need to learn to
be inclusive rather than exclu
sive. Parents need to respect their
children and their changing
needs, and students need to
respect their parents and recog
nize the real concern that parents
have for their children.
We can achieve the atmos
phere we seek in our school. We
can do it if we are all working in
the same direction to achieve our
goals. We can do it without a
magic box—because what we
need to put into the box can be
found within ourselves.

CJP Names 1996-97 Board
by Beth Davis
Charlotte Jewish Preschool
officially installed the new mem
bers of the 1996-97 Board of
Directors at its first June meet
ing. Linda Hindel will continue
to serve the board as President.
Bob Davis will assume the duties
of Treasurer and Jenny Stem will
be Secretary. Also serving as at-
large board members are; Anita
Biederman, Nancy Bernstein,
Lisa Frick, Sherri Leonard,
Rhona Nadel, Tammy Seigel,
Marvin Sigal, Anne Sinsheimer,
Joe Steiner and Marc Steir.
Beverly Grey will represent
the PTC in a nonvoting status.
These board members represent
both temples as well as elected
parent representatives. Parents
are encouraged to talk with any
of the board members about
questions or concerns.
The mission of the CJP
Board is to guide school policy
and oversee finances. This in
done in close cooperation with
Director Debby Block and in
respect to the needs of the stu-
. dents and their families.
The Charlotte Jewish
Preschool is jointly sponsored by
Temple Beth El and Temple
Israel. “We are both proud and
fortunate to have the rabbinical
and cantorial staff at both tem
ples actively involved in the
everyday lives of the preschool
ers, as well as in our special
events throughout the year.” said
Debby Block. “It teaches the
children that the Rabbis and
Cantors are special teachers who
are accessible on their level. The
parents and teachers greatly
value the time these very busy
professionals spend at our
school.”
CJP will have 146 students
enrolled for the 1996-97 school
year, a school record. Board
President Linda Hindel com
mented, “We are thrilled that CJP
is growing so rapidly. The
Preschool is often the first oppor
tunity young Jewish children
have to learn about their religion
and culture in a social setting. We
also welcome the new members
of the professional staff at both
temples and look forward to their
joining the preschool family.”
