Dr. Andrew Ettin Joins
Blumenthal Jewish Home

Blumenthal Jewish Home is
happy to announce that Dr.
Andrew Ettin of Winston-Salem
has joined the Home as the new
Religious Director. Dr. Ettin has
served the Home as a volunteer
for many years; he has assisted
Religious Director Sam Jacobson
with Shabbat and holiday ser
vices and has presented special
programs for the residents.
After almost thirty years as
BJH religious leader, Sam
Jacobson is retiring as the
Religious Director. He is not say
ing goodby to residents, staff and
family members, however. Sam
says that although it is time for
him to step back from the respon
sibility and commitment of
Religious Director, he is not giv
ing up his relationship with the
Home and the residents. Sam
Jacobson will still be seen
monthly at BJH conducting ser
vices in Andrew Ettin’s absence
and visiting with the residents.
Dr. Ettin, a professor of
English Literature at Wake Forest
University since 1977, is a mem
ber of Temple Emanuel in
Winston-Salem. As both a stu
dent of Torah and teacher of
Andrew Ettin
English he has been proficient at
blending his love of literature and
teaching with his increasing
interest and knowledge of
Judaism. He introduced an
American Jewish Literature
course into the English curricu
lum and has taught it for seven
years as well as teaching a
Modem Judaism course in the

Andrew Ettin has served as a
lay leader at Temple Emanuel in
Winston-Salem and acted as the
interim Rabbi for the congrega
tion in 1994-95. In 1990 he com
pleted the UAHC Rabbinic Aide
Training Program and has since
served as the religious leader for
Temple Israel in Salisbury, NC
and Congregation Emanuel in
Statesville, NC.
Andrew Ettin brings to this
new role knowledge, experience
and the desire to best meet the
needs of the residents and their
families. He plans to introduce
ideas to enhance the religious and
spiritual experiences of the resi
dents, as well as visit residents
both in the Home and at the hos
pital and to be there for families
if they need his assistance. “I
would like the families of resi
dents to feel that they can turn to
me as a contact for advice or con
versation about concerns of a rit
ual or spiritual nature regarding
their family member,” states
Ettin.
