Charlotte Welcomes Russian Families I By Ellen Dubin For the past several months volunteers have been busy preparing for and welcoming several refugee families from the former Soviet Union. The most recent arrivals include Natasha Selyavo and her toddler Max. Natasha looks forward to her husband’s arrival from Latvia early this Fall. The young mother plans to work as soon as day care can be obtained for Max. She hopes to go to CPCC next year. Natasha and Max arrived in Charlotte during July along with her parents 11’ia and Olga Shvarts and her 13 year old brother Eugene. II’ia is an electrical engi neer and began to work as an electrician less than three weeks after his arrival. Olga is a seamstress who obtained a job at Highland Mills the same day as her husband! Eugene is enrolled in ESL class es at Hawthorne Traditional School. He is an eighth grader who looks forward to improving his English skills and being with new American friends. The fami ly lives in Italian Village apart ments at Providence Square. Their welcome was headed by Susan Rabinovitch from Lubavitch. Shasha and Svetlana Ziskind came from the Ukraine in June. He is an electrical engineer whose excellent work enabled him to land a job very soon after their arrival. Svetlana is seeking a part-time job near their Italian Village apartment. Their welcome was headed by Eula Crane and Penny Eisenberg from Temple Beth El. Members of the Blyudaya family have been working for a cleaning agency since their April arrival. Boris is still seeking a position in a hospital or medical office. His improved English skills are enabling him to study for an American medical license. He plans to take the qualifying test in June. His mother Tatyana was a teacher in the Ukraine and she would like to work with chil dren as an educator or in a book store. Her husband Mikael and daughter Zhanna live with her in Idlewild Apartments. Their wel come was headed by Temple Israel. All of the families look for ward to calls and visits from members of the Charlotte Jewish community. Contact Ellen Dubin to find out how to get in touch with our newest families.
