Just as a parent wouldn't let their child play out in the middle of a busy street, the same word of caution applies to the Internet. Long distance travel around the Jewish sites on the World Wide Web takes on a new meaning — but always, always, wear your seat belt! 0 Jewish parents who want their children to stay within the Jewish community as adults have a new reason to send them to Jewish sleep-away camps this year. A new report supports the theory that Jewish sleep-away camps (those which hold religious services or have significant Jewish content) have an important influence on adult Jewish practices, according to Ira M. Sheskin, Hi.D., a University of Miami researcher. "Jewish continuity is one of the major issues in the Jewish community today," said Sheskin, a professor of Judaic Studies and an expert in Jewish demognq)hy. "Although we cannot prove cause and effect, the report shows there is a significant correlation between attending a Jewish sleep- away camp as a child and Jewish behaviors (such as lighting Chanukah candles) as an adult." Dr. Sheskin recently completed a demographic study of the Charlotte Jewish community for the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte. Sheskin's report includes the results of Jewish demographic studies of Miami, South Palm Beach, Delaware, Atlanta and Milwaukee, which included questions on Jewish sleepaway camps. Among the results found, for example: In Milwaukee, 82% of those who attended a Jewish sleep- away camp usually or always light Chanvkah candles, compared with 64% of those who did not. In l^lmington, 58% of those who attend^ a Jewish sleep- away camp are members of a synagogue, compared to 41% of those who did not attend a Jewish sleep-away camp. The report includes a survey of 417 former campers of Blue Star Camps, a North C^arolina Jewish sleep-away camp with offices in Hollywood, Florida. As part of the three-year study, Sheskin compared the results of the surveys he conducted with the fmdings of the 1990 National Jewish Population Survey (NJPS). Among the alumni of Blue Star Camps, the study found: 63% are members of a synagogue, compared to 33% of those surveyed in the NJPS 23% had intermarried, compared to 45% in the NJPS 86% attend or usually attend a Seder, compared to 65% in the NJPS. Blue Star Camps commissioned the study to evaiuate the camp's long-term impact on its campers. Nearly one-third of all children attending private, independent sleep-away camps in the United States are Jewish, according to a 1990 study by Maguire Associates, Inc. They all have award- winning cool Jewish sites on the World W^ide Web. Each week the Jewish Communications Network [http://www.jcnl8.com] selects one Internet location for the Cool Jewish Site award. Tzvee Zahavy, editor-in-chief of J(TN, explained that his staff surfs the Internet constantly in search of cool Jewish Web-sites. "We look fOT something unique to the Internet, something oxy- moronic, ironic or cutting-edge in design that would never be published in any other medium," 2^avy said. "Who would think that ultra-conservative Satmar Hasidim would have a jazzy World Wide Web page? Who would expect a site extolling the virtues of Jewish juggling?" he wondered. JCN debated for a while before designating a diary-site at a Palestinian university for the award. "The design and content were defmitely cool. What swayed us was the tone and approach. The author showed us that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict might be mitigated by communication through the Web," Zahavy elucidated. Zlahavy suggested that Web authors who think they might have a cool Jewish site should definitely contact JCN by email at feedback@jcnl8.com. Surfers looking for cool and Jewish sites should visit JCN at http ://www.jcn 18. com/coolsite/. O When a child asks about the Holocaust (Continued from page 8) Hassidic man is shocked when he learns of the Holocaust from a newsreel? — besides, it is impossible. Consider Stalin's infamous remark — that a single death is a tragedy, but millions of deaths are merely a statistic. The Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. bases much of its visitor program on this sad truth that one should deal with individual tragedies in order to understand the universal. (Suggestion: Video: Daniel's Story.) Remember to bring up the example ... of Righteous Gentiles who helped Jews and others to survive at the risk of their own lives. (Suggestions: Lowry. Lois, Number the Stars for grades 2-4, Oppenheim, Shulamith Levey, The Lily Cupboard for grades 6th -8th.) In short, choose to raise the sad topics against an established background of the joys of Jewish OFF BROADWAY SHOE WAREHOUSE life, taking into account your child's individual concerns and needs. The Speizman Library and the Carolina Agency for Jewish Education have many additional resources to help you. Peter Stark, a Jewish educator, was the Chairman of the 1995 CAJE Corrference.
