The Charlotte Jewish News - May, 1997 ■ Page 7 The National Conference Announces 1997 HUMANITARIAN AWARD HONOREES The National Conference (TNC), founded as the National Conference of Christians and Jews, is pleased to announce the recipients of the 1997 Humanitarian Awards. Mr. Douglas Wade Booth and Mr. Harvey B. Gantt will be honored at the May 6, 1997 Annual Awards Dinner which will be hosted this year by Rolfe and Ann Neill. The honorees were selected based on their commitment to the community in bringing better understanding and relations among all races, cultures, and religions in support of the mission of The National Conference. Mr. Booth has played an important role in many phases of our community’s growth and development. With a lifetime of remarkable public commitment and service and his leadership as president of Duke Power, Mr. Booth has promoted under standing and respect of all people through his volunteer leadership as president of the United Way of the Central Carolinas, as a member of the Board of Visitors of Johnson C. Smith University, director of Children’s Services Network, and as a trustee of the Alexander’s Children Center. His work has also extended to the arts and cultural community, religious and education community with service in numerous capacities. Booth has also served the community as a member of the board of Mecklenburg County Commissioners. Mr. Gantt has a long history of service in the Charlotte com munity with his membership in various organizations including the NAACP, chair of the Johnson C. Smith University United Negro College Fund Drive, Afro- American Cultural Center, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan YMCA, Charlotte political arena as Mayor of the City of Charlotte, City Council, and U. S. Democratic Senate Nominee. Gantt has earned a number of other awards throughout his years in Charlotte and holds honorary degrees from six colleges and universities. (Continued on page 11) The National Conference Announces 1997 ANYTOWN The National Conference, founded as The National Conference of Christians and Jews, announces it's tenth year of ANYTOWN, a week long diversity appreciation and leadership training experience for high school students. The National Conference is now accepting applications for adult advisors, college aged counselors, and student delegates. ANYTOWN is rapidly being recognized as one of the most successful human relations programs for youth in America. ANYTOWN earned national recognition in 1985 when it was featured on the NBC Today Show. The program helps build self esteem, leadership skills. communication skills, youth/adult relations, and understanding and appreciation of diversity in race, religion, gender, and culture. The Charlotte Region of The National Conference is pleased to also announce that one of the "founding fathers" of the program, Richard Valenzuela, will be directing the ANYTOWN experience. This year’s event will be held at the Blowing Rock Assembly Grounds, July 6-12,1997. Adult advisors play an important role by providing experience and insight into the world beyond high school. Teachers, counselors, nurses, clergy, business people, law enforcement officers and other professionals are encouraged to apply. College Aged Counselors live with the delegates, giving constant guidance and encouragement throughout the week. Prior training for advisors and counselors will be provided. Delegates are rising juniors and seniors and are selected based on their desire to participate and leadership potential. The cost for delegates is $275 for the week, which includes training, room, board and transportation. Schoterships and payment plans are available.
