Representative Sue Myrick welcomes Israeli delegate to Charlotte In honor of IsraeVs 50th Anniversary and Chanukah On December 17, with nearly 200 members of the Jewish Community looking on in Gorelick Hall, Representative Sue Myrick officially welcomed Yael Heled to the City of Charlotte. Heled, a seventeen year-old from Karme-Yosef, Israel, was one of four leaders of the Maccabi Tzair (the Maccabi Youth Movement in Israel) chosen to visit the United States as part of the S3rd Annual Chanukah Torch relay in celebra tion of Israel’s 50th Anniversary and the festival of lights, Chanukah. The evening’s festivities began with the Israeli teen running through Shalom Park, joined at various intervals by members of the different Judaic Youth Groups. This was followed by a Chanukah dinner and a symbolic lighting of the Chanukah candles with the torch flame, and finally, a presen tation by Ms. Heled to over 150 teen-aged members of the Jewish community. The City’s presentation was the highlight, but only one of many activities planned for the young Israeli “ambassador” during her six-day visit to the Queen City. While in town, she visited many of the local high, primary and ele mentary schools to do presenta tions and discuss the differences (and similarities!) between Israeli and American kids, always ending the sessions with an opportunity for the Americans to ask ques tions. Charlotte was one of only nine cities in America selected for these special visits because we will be hosting the 1998 JCC Maccabi Games next August 9-14. Over 600 teen athletes from more than 30 US cities, Canada, Israel and Great Britain are expected to attend these Games. A special thank you to the Meyers and Jacobs families for opening their homes to Ms. Heled during her stay in Charlotte. ^ Members of the different youth organizations joined Yael Heled in the Charlotte leg of the Maccabi Torch Relay at Shalom Park on December 17.
