The Charlotte Jewish News - March, 1998 ■ Page 11 Youth Visions Mickey Barack Aberman AZA By Josh Klemons (Sopher) We here in Mickey Barack Aberman have been keeping our selves busy. We recently had elec tions, due to our six month terms. We were successful in electing a new board for our chapter. Our new President is Austin Karp. Our new Vice-president is Josh Klemons. The two Vice-presidents of New Membership (remaining from first term) are Phil Schriebman and Darren Katz. Robby Sachs in our second term recording secretary and Ben Levine is our new corresponding secretary. Joel Frank is treasurer and Josh Klemons is also our fourth term sopher, putting him in charge of newspapers and public affairs. All other board appoint ments will be made by Austin before the end of the month. Since everyone getting into the spirit of football with the recent Superbowl, MBA decided that we would not be left out. We played football at the JCC soccer field in order to get us ready (and dirty) to go over to Josh Klein’s house and watch the big game. We had a lot of fun, and will probably continue to do it next year and so on. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Klein, and congratulations to Austin and the rest of the board. Dancin’ the night away: The Sweetheart Beau On the fine Saturday night of February 7, 180 Jewish teenagers from North Carolina and Virginia gathered for an evening of Mardi- Gras, dancing, and fun. The annu al dance sponsored by both Chai Chaverim BBG and Mickey Barak Aberman AZA was held at Temple Israel. Coordinators Vivian Resnik and Shawn Nearman worked hard on preparing for the four hours of pure excitement. With a DJ, deco rations revolving around the Mardi-Gras theme, invitations, and snacks, this tradition is often known as “The Jewish Prom.” Most girls arrive in evening dress es and guys in semi-formal to for mal attire. The dance was temporarily interrupted at 11:00 for the Sweetheart and Beau court cere monies. Beau court, presented by Melissa Stutts, the 1997-1998 Sweetheart, and Michelle Meier, the 1997-1998 Chai Chaverim N’siah, went smoothly. Over twenty guys in Mickey Barak Aberman AZA (MBA) were elect ed by the girls to be on court. Each gentleman was identified by a short poem and escorted onto the dance floor by a member of Chai Chaverim. One special AZA in particular was chosen to be the Beau of Chai Chaverim. This year’s beau is Tommy Mann. The AIT (new member) beau is Scott Friend. The same ceremony was con ducted again. This time the guys presented the girls court and the girl they elected as Sweetheart. This years MBA sweetheart is All Shafranek. The MIT (new mem ber) sweetheart is Becca Frucht. Austin Karp, MBA Godol, and Shawn Nearman led the Sweetheart court ceremony. Parents were invited to watch the court ceremonies, especially those whose children were on court. The night was a tremendous success. Not only did both Charlotte chapters m^e a consid erable amount of money, but everyone had an evening they will never forget. ^ LIBERTY: By Alina Johnson (PMicity) Temple Beth El’s senior youth group, LIBERTY, spent the past couple of months working with their new leadership committee, TYM. The members of TYM worked hard to plan some great events for February and March! In February, LIBERTY planned a creative program and service on Love and Sex. We were very pleased with the turnout and hope everyone had a good time and per haps even learned something too! February 28, LIBERTY held the Masquerade Ball. Members of NFTY’s southern region came down to Charlotte for a night of dancing and spirit boosting. Speaking of Spirit, the South did really well at ThEvent, which was held in Baltimore, MD this year. Hianks to all that helped with all of these events. March has a lot in store for LIB ERTY, including elections for a new board. For more information about dates and programs, call any of your board members or Rabbi Morris at Temple Beth El. We hope to see you all at Spring Kdlah ‘98 in April! O Chai Chaverim BBG: By Erin Neunan (S'ganit/Vice President) Chai Chaverim has been doing terrific! At the end of January was the first ever MIT States in all of Eastern Region BBG. It was planned by both Melissa Stutts (Chai Chaverim MIT Mom) and Sarah Passe (Chai Chaverim MIT S’ganit). Becca Frucht (Chai Chaverim MIT N’siah) was hon ored with the ceremony of States where she gave a speech and installed an new MIT board. We started our month with a bake goods and beverage sale at Sunday School on one Sunday morning. We raised over 150 dol lars for ISF (International Service Fund) and needed supplies for our chapter. Five Chai girls attended Council Execs in Greensboro North Carolina. All council board mem bers, chapter presidents, and chair positions attended the Greensboro’s BBYO Shabbat and the business meeting. The annual Sweetheart Beau dance was a major success for our chapter. We also had a summer programs program, an Israel pro gram, and a conmiunity service project. BBG tries to program around six principles: citizenship. community service, sisterhood, Jewish heritage, recreation, and creativity. Chai girls take pride in their self led programs that incor porate all of these aspects. March will be another exciting month with a BBG Leadership Training Institute in Greensboro coordinated in part by our very own Michelle Meier. Also, Junior/Senior is coming up for upperclassmen. If you are inter ested in joining BBG, please con tact Melissa Stutts at 364-3809 or Ellen Goldstein at the JCC at 366- 5007. i USY: By Bethany Bernstein (President): February was an extremely busy month for USY. The board spent several Thursday evenings at meet ings, planning for Ein-Gedi’s Sub- RegionalConvention. However, it was well worth it. Coordinators Shari Flash and Lindsey Kessler did an amazing job on creating an unforgettable weekend for USYers throughout the South-East. Jewish teenagers joined together for ruach, leaming, prayer, fun and friends from February 27th - March 1. The theme of the convention was “As our Four Fathers Slept.” The con vention focused on religious inter pretations of dreams and personal connections with G-d. Thank you to Temple Israel and the JCC, as well as the many families and indi viduals who helped USY show Ein- Gedi that Southem hospitality. The- weekend was truly a “dream come true.” Although caught up with the planning of the convention, USY still had its share of fun. We went ice skating on a Sunday afternoon. USYers were encouraged to bring a non-Jewish friend in order to give them a little taste of a fun youth group. March is looking exciting too. We are planning to participate in the Purim camival, as well as have a special program emphasiz ing certain aspects of Israel. If you or someone you know has ques tions regarding USY, please call President, Bethany Bernstein at 846-9290. Little Gym. The heart sees better than the eye.
