Instead, they perform their acts of tzedakah and kindness more privately, more personally, calling less attention to themselves, and more attention to the deed. There is the woman who calls the elderly couple to ask about their welfare when she misses see ing them at Shabbat services. There is the man who drives any one anyplace, no matter what the reason. There is the couple who lovingly cares for children when parents are in a bind. They live among us, these quiet heroes. Whether they donate a few hours a week to a hospital or a neighbor, whether they give of their time or their hearts, we know who they are and we appreciate them. Who are your favorite quiet heroes? Temple Beth El would like to start recognizing the Quiet Heroes among us. Send us your recom mendations for the C^uiet Heroes of the month and weTl recognize them and their deeds. Mitzvah Day Here’s a chance for all of us in the Temple Beth El community to become heroes of some kind. Mitzvah Day 1998 will be June 7th. On that day, there will be numerous opportunities for you and your family to perform an act of tzedakah with many others. Watch this space and the TBE bul letin for more information on Mitzvah Day. And keep June 7th open. Poetry/Essay Contest for TBE Religious School Students The students of Mrs. Seigel, Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Valenstein, and Mr. Bol^r participated in an Essay/Poetry contest. All p£^>ers were to be based on boolu bor rowed from the Speizman Jewish Library. The entries were out standing and were submitted to Shofar Magazine. While Shofar Magazine has not made any selec tion to publish as of this writing, the teachers and Mrs. Warshenbrot chose the following poem by Robbie Gould of Mrs. Seigel’s class as their favorite. Friendship By Robbie Gould Helen and Lydia were best of friends. They thought their friendship would never end. Soon Helen would be turning nine. During the party they would try some wine. During the party Lydia had on a star. So the Nazis would know who the Jews are. While Lydia and Helen were hav ing fun. Madam Eleven and Midnight Ghost were on the run. Madam Eleven was able to hide. But Midnight Ghost had to say goodbye. “I must go home!” Lydia cried that night. Which made Helen and Lydia have a fight. “You are leaving my party, you are not my best friend!” Helen shouted again and again. But Lydia went home, to warn mom and dad. She ran with all the might that she had. But Helen never saw Lydia again. But in her heart, they were still best friends.
