Maccabi Mania Sweeps Queen City
Athletes from 28 cities arrive for games
By Amy London
On August 9 athletes from
around the U.S. will arrive in
Charlotte for the Maccabi games.
Our entire community has joined
together with the conmion goal of
making these games a great suc
cess.
In order to make these games
special for everyone involved, the
Steering Committee of the 1998
JCC Maccabi Games invites our
friends, neighbors and conmiunity
members to join us for the com
mencement of the 1998 JCC
Maccabi Games at the Opening
Ceremonies Celebration, Sunday,
August 9, 7:00 PM (please arrive
on time — the show will begin
promptly). Hornets Training
Center — Fort Mill, SC.
The evening promises to be a
spectacular event with, lots of fun,
excitement and touching
moments. There will be a tribute
by former Maccabiah athletes to
the eleven athletes slain in the
Munich Olympic tjames, a cere
monial lighting of the torch, a trib
ute to Israel’s 50th Birthday and
the highlight of the evening...the
parade of athletes, featuring over
800 athletes and coaches from 28
cities across the US and around
the world, and, of course, our
amazing TEAM CHARLOTTE!!
To get to the Hornets Training
Centet From the JCC, take
Providence Road north to the first
light. Turn left onto Fairview.
After about 3 miles, Fairview
becomes lyvola Road. Go
£^)proximately 5 miles to 1-77 and
go south to Exit 88 (approx. 8-10
miles). At the light, turn left. Go
approximately 1/4 mile, past a gas
station and get into the right lane.
Go right onto Deerfield Drive.
Bear right, follow the curve. The
Training Center is right next to die
Knights Baseball Stadium. (From
the highway, you will be able to
see the “giant baseball in the sky.”
It's a huge landmark — you can’t
miss it!)
Support the punes
Other ways the community can
help catch and sustain Maccabi
Mania is to participate in the
fundraising efforts for the games.
There is an exclusive limited raf
fle being held with First Prize of
two USAir tickets, round-trip to
anywh^ in the continental U.S.
Second prize is a fox-trimmed
leather coat provided by Montaldo
Furs, plus lots of additional
Maccabi souvenir prizes. Tickets
are $18.00 each; th^ tickets for
$50.00; six tickets for $98.00.
Tickets can purchased at the JCC
front desk and all proceeds will
benefit the Maccabi games and
Team Charlotte. The drawing will
be held at the closing ceremonies,
Thursday, August 13; you need
not be present to win.
Volunteer Opportunities
There arc nine committees that
still need your help as a volunteer.
Opportunities are available in reg
istration, opening ceremonies,
hospitality, at the athletic venues,
transportation, food, camival/pool
party/dance; closing celebration;
and office assistance. This will be
an incredible chance to be a part of
the largest Jewish community-

this area. Exact times and shifts
vary by committee. Please contact
the Maccabi office to sign up for
one or more shift.
New Direct Hotline Number
As of July 1, the Maccabi office
can be reached directly at (704)

The Dead Sea Scrolls: what do they mean to
Jews and Christians after 50 years?
Professor James D. Tabor wili speak
at Temple Israel's Adult Education
Seminar on September 10.
Professor James D. Tabor of
UNC Charlotte will lecture on this
topic at Temple Israel, Thursday,
September 10, at 8:00 PM.
The sensational discovery of the
library of a 1st century B.C.E.
Jewish apocalyptic sect, that most
scholars identify as the Essenes, in
caves northwest of the Dead Sea
in 1947, may be the greatest
archaeological find of the century.
Known as the Dead Sea Scrolls,
this collection of over 600 frag
mentary sacred documents has
revolutionized our understaiKiing
of late 2nd Temple Judaism, as
well as the origins of early
Christianity. Now that all the
Dead Sea Scrolls are available
both to scholars and in English
translation, what can be responsi
bly said regarding their origin,
influence, and ongoing signifi
cance for both Jews and
Christians? Prof James D. Tabor,
who specializes in the scrolls, the
study of ancient Judaism, and
early Christianity, will examine
these questions. He brings first
hand knowledge to this study hav
ing done field work at Qumran,
the site of their discovery.
James D. Tabor is a Professor in
the Department of Religious
Studies at the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte where he has
taught since 1989. He previously
held positions at the University of
Notre Dame (1979-85) and the
College of William and Mary
(1985-89). His Ph.D. is from the
University of Chicago in the area
of Christian Origins and ancient
Judaism with a specialty in apoca
