The Charlotte Jewish News - October, 1998 - Page 7 Jewish Family Setyices REFLECTIONS Jewish Family Services Spotlights its Board of Directors By Penny Wagner-Schuster, Executive Director For the past several months, articles have been written about the new services, programs, sup port groups, and volunteer oppor tunities available at Jewish Family Services. Last month’s article highlighted the staff at the agency in hopes that the Jewish Community would become better acquainted with the individuals who make these programs and ser vices possible. It is through the dedication and hard work of the staff that JFS is able to offer such a wide range of services. As you may know, JFS is an agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte. JFS, howev er, has its own Board Committee that makes policy for the agency. The planning and development of agency ideas begins with this group of individuals who volun teer their time and talents for a cause they truly believe in. The mission and foundation of Jewish Family Services exists because of the countless hours, meetings and work that these individuals under take to make JFS the agency that it is. The JFS Board of Directors is a group of twenty-one individuals of varied backgrounds and talents who lend their areas of expertise in the planning, development and groundwork of services which the staff implement. There are six Board committees as well as the agency’s Executive Committee. Marilyn 'Hickman is the JFS Board Chair. She has been in this position since 1996. Under her leadership, the agency sought and secured me for the new director. This was a decision for which, I for one, will be forever thankful. As the agency’s Board Chair, Marilyn presides over all of the Board meetings and supervises all affairs of the agency. Alan Goldberg is the JFS Vice- Chair. He has also worked tireless ly in fund raising efforts for the agency through the Friends’ Campaign. In January 1999, Alan will assume the role as Board Chair, a position that he will hold for the next three years. Other members of the Fundraising Committee are: Milt Tager, Brett Goodman, Jeff T\irk, Helmut Brandt, Ron Katz, and Dicky Shapiro. Marilyn Shapiro is the agency’s Financial Chairperson and the Treasurer of the Board. She is responsible for helping with development of the yearly budget for the agency. This committee is also responsible for the fiscal overview of the agency and pro grams. Other members of the Financial/Budget Committee are; Brett Goodman, Steve Hockfield, and Ron Katz. Randy Sperling joined the Board in 1998. She is the Chair of the Programming Committee. Randy has helped plan many of the new programs which JFS has started. This committee helps focus the direction of the agency. Other committee members include; Bunny Bramson, Marla Brodsky, Audrey Madans, Gene Marx and Bob Yudell. Nomi Bergman is the Chair of the Public Relations Committee. This committee has been hard at work developing a new brochure for the agency. Ways to publicize the new programs and services is also an important function of this committee. Members of this com mittee include; Susan Bossert, Donna Emerson, Judy Kaufmann, and Dicky Shapiro. Dr. Judy Pliner is the Chair of the Personnel/Policy Committee. This committee has been working on personnel guidelines, agency policies, and hiring practices. The members of this committee include; Ellen Stern and Steve Hockfield. Linda Goldberg is the chair person of the Mitzvah Maker Program Committee. This com mittee helps to establish policy and guidelines for the agency’s volunteer program. Members include; Marsha Scheer, Lynn Elelstein, Beverly Tirsun, and Gail Green. As the agency’s Executive Director, I serve as ex-officio to all of the committees of JFS. It has been such a pleasure working with such a wonderful group of people. A lot of changes have taken place during the past year. The staff and the Board of JFS are working hard developing more services and pro grams that will begin in the months to come. The vol unteers are selected by the following community-wide groups: Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte. Jewish Family Services, Jewish Community Center and the Charlotte Jewish Preschool This month’s volun teer was offered by Harriet Perlin, Volunteer Coordinator of Jewish Family Services. Betty and John Levin Do you have time on your hands? Are you looking for activi ties that are rewarding to you as well as beneficial to others? The group of activities that Betty and John Levin have undertaken through the years illustrate the wkJc fange ol volunteer oppcrtun»" ties available in the Charlotte com munity. Betty and John Levin came to Charlotte in 1964 from Cincinnati and raised their four children here. For John, whose childhood was spent in Beaufort, South Carolina, it was a return home to the region of the country where he grew up. Betty worked for many years as a social worker for Mecklenburg County. When it came time to retire she looked for volunteer activities that were in a familiar field, and John joined in as well. The two focused on the type of volunteerism that would help oth ers to help themselves, with Betty volunteering for the United Way’s information and referral program, where she went out into the field to assess family needs. She also vol unteered for Planned Parenthood’s family planning program. John focused on the ABLE program that helps adults achieve literacy. Betty nctai that the needs of the commu nity change, and as a result the focMS of the assistance agencies and groups change to meet these needs. For example, the ABLE pro gram now assists adults working towards their General Education Diploma (GED). John is thinking of returning to the ABLE program with its new focus.
