Goodman is especially sensitive to female characters, and deftly weaves a feminist perspective into her story. Members of an ultra-orthodox German community, who call themselves the Kirlchners, move from Washington Heights to Upstate New York for the summer. They grapple with their Jewish identities privately and as they interact with locals. The fragility of the future of their world is felt. Their lives ebb and flow in accor dance with laws governing diet, time, and prayer. As Jewish law — and Rav Kirschner — inform their lives, they are now made to feel holy; now made to feel confined. Two men commute in Friday afternoon traffic to meet families for Shabbat. One is quite obser vant; the other, more secular. A modest Jewish girl makes friends with a Syrian one who is preco cious and outspoken. They are both on the edge of adulthood, when identities are in flux. Rav Kirschner has two sons, one of whom will succeed him. The favorite is assimilated. A devout woman who yearns for work in business receives rabbinical per mission to run a store only to lose it for making a small error in judg ment. Her sixth pregnancy brings to a head her conflicting desires. The local judge has a secret about forbidden interfaith relationships that allows him to control the real estate, and character of the area. For summer reading, the book is lovely. Goodman beautifully describes nature in the Hudson River Valley. The plot provides enough tension to keep the pages turning. The language is easy to read. The Temple Israel Book Club is open to all members of the Jewish community. “Drops ins” and those who have not read the selection are welcome.
