The C>i arlotte Jewish News - August 2000 - Page 16 Jewish Family Services Making Marriage Work Program Scheduled to Begin September 13,2000 Begin, ning Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, Je’wish Family Services will be cifering their successful enrichment program “Making Marriage Work.” This program, which was developed by the University of Judaism in Califomi a, has over twenty years of programming sxperience to help malce marriage a success. A recent study of this program revealed that more than 90% of program graduates have remained married tc each other. “Making Marriage Work” is a series of ten workshops for cou ples considering marriage, engaged, or newly married. Trained, professional, master- level coimnselors lead sessions on all aspects of married life. Two of the sessions, led by the Rabbis at Temple 3eth El and Temple Israel, focus c»n the way Judaism strengthens and enhances mar riage and family life. Financial issues su-ch as dual-income bud geting, ii^surance, investing, man aging and buying a home are also discussed. “Makimg Nlarriage Work” ses sions have been designed to create a safe, ojxsn environment. JFS has a trained professional team that is devoted to teaching couples how to endure the test of time through interactive techniques that are both stinkvlating and enjoyable. Sessions cover these topics: The Meaning of Love and Commitment How Personal Histories and Personalities Affect Relationships Art of Communication Conflict Resolution Parents, In-laws, and Friends Dual-Career Couples Sexuality and Marriage Children and Family Planning Money Management How Jewish Life Can Strengthen Your Marriage All couples take an Attitude, Values, and Personality inventory that explores their own relation ship. The Inventory is reviewed in a private session with the coun selor. What Participants Say... “Good to realize that our issues and arguments are shared by oth ers ... that we are normal. ’’ "Another way to get to know your partner better. ” “Making new friends by sharing thoughts and reality with others. ” “Learning how humor and laugh ter can keep problems in perspec tive. ” We invite you to call and sign up for a class. The cost of the ten- week workshop is $200.00, which includes workshop, workbook and program materials. JFS Children’s Support Group Jewisli Family Services is pleased to announce the formation of a Children of Divorce Support Group. JFS will provide a safe, confi dential einvironment for children to discuss their fears and concerns about their role in their changing family. Children ages 6-10 are encour aged to join this important group. There will be a $5.00 fee for each week. No one will be denied due to an inability to pay. Julie Duckworth, Executive Director of Friendship Trays, was the guest speaker. JFS Mitzvah Maker Volunteers were honored for their many hours of volunteer services. All volun teers attending the bmnch were recognized an all categories of volunteerism whether it was dri ving clients, cooking meals, tele phone reassurance, friendly visits or collecting food for the JFS Food Pantry. In 1999, the 200 Mitzvah Maker Volunteers logged more than 1,400 hours of volunteer ser vice. Volunteers provided more than 200 hours of rides and volun teer cooks prepared more than 200 meals for the agency’s Volunteer Meals on Wheels program. JFS Mitzvah Maker Volunteers are special people.
