Plans Underway for a Jewish Middle School Jerry and Barbara Levin have established a $250,000 endow ment for the purpose of creating a Jewish middle school in Charlotte. Thanks to this extremely generous gesture, a group of interested par ents has formed a board of direc tors and is searching for classroom space for the 2001-2002 school year. Beginning with a sixth grade and adding a class each year, the proposed Jewish middle school will be independent of Charlotte Jewish Day School, as well as any synagogues or other agencies in the Jewish community. The pioneering parents have exf>erienced the benefits of day school education and want to give their adolescents the gift of three more years in an environment that provides a sense of belonging, contentment, and peace. Since Charlotte Jewish Day School is now focused on the K through 5 age groups, it cannot accommo date a middle school program. While the core group of students will be CJDS graduates, accom modations will be made for stu dents with a limited Jewish educa tional background. Former graduates of the day school have repeatedly demon strated the ability to succeed in a variety of educational settings. However, many parents want to continue the intensive Jewish studies that will complement an advanced secular curriculum. Following is an anecdote that illustrates the beauty of Jewish day school education: A current fifth-grade boy was asked by his mother if he would want to attend Jewish middle school even though it would start off fairly small and that there might not be as many extracurricular opportunities. His answer was “That’s okay. Mom, Those things don’t matter. As long as I’m getting my Jewish educa tion, I’ll be happy.” For further information about the middle school, call Dr. Ellen Stecker at 442-1642. ^ MACCABIAH GOLF TOURNAMENT Thank You Update In last month’s tournament recap article, we failed to mention some select individuals who also volun teered their time to insure the success of the event.
