The Charlotte Jewish News - June-July 2001 - Page 16 Jewish Family Services Jewish Family Services Board of Directors By Nina Lewis, Public Relations Committee Co-Chair Last month I highlighted the wonderful staff at Jewish Family Services. For the next several issues I would like to tell you a lit tle bit about our fantastic and dynamic Board of Directors. Alan Goldberg is the Board Chair and has been on the board for 5-1/2 years. Alan knows first hand what it is like to be painfully disabled,- both physically and mentally, and to treasure the com Alan Goldberg (T Family and Cosmetic Dentistry DR. Alan had suffered for 16 years with Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction (CFIDS) and helped found the National CFIDS organi zation. He believes without family and friends he would not have been able to survive the stress of this insidious disease and with their help he has almost fully recovered. Joining JFS and his commitment to the organization has helped Alan in his healing process and has given him an opportunity to share a mission with which he has had a personal experience. Besides his own experience, Alan has seen many other people have their lives affected by Jewish Family Services. He reflects about one woman in particular who repeatedly thanks JFS and Alan (as a representative of JFS) for saving her life. This woman’s hus band had left her, she was diag nosed with cancer and she felt sui cide was her only way out. She was counseled at JFS, developed new relationships and now has a much happier and productive life. Jeffrey Turk is the current Vice- Chair and will become Board Chair at the end of the year as Alan’s term expires. He has served on the Jewish Family Services board for three years and chaired JFS’ annual fund-raising effort, the Friends Campaign for two very successful years. Jeff finds it immensely gratifying to be a member of the JFS board because he believes (and appreciates) the agency’s purpose and existence as a social and human services agency. JFS is committed to pre serving, strengthening and enhancing the quality of life for all in the Charlotte Jewish communi ty. He further states that in his time on the board he is happy to see an increase in the number of volunteers for the Mitzvah Maker program which offers companion ship to those alone, provides trans portation for those without and prepares hot meals for those who can’t. The number of contribu JejfTurk with his two daughters, Emily and Diana. tions for the JFS food pantry has also significantly increased which ensures no member of our Jewish Community goes hungry. Jeff is also proud that the preschools, the Day School and the religious schools in the Jewish community teach about tzedakah and have tzedakah projects that give contri butions to JFS programs. This enables his two daughters and their fellow schoolmates to learn at an early age the value of giving to those less fortunate and how important it is for Jews to take care of other Jews. As a father and a JFS board member, Jeff finds it reassuring and comforting to know that Charlotte is raising the next gener ation with the foundation of tzedakah, and consequently, help ing JFS remain vital and strong. meets many needs in the commu nity and thus enhanced the quality of life for those individuals and families that have utilized and therefore able to benefit from the services JFS provides. Brett Goodman Brett Goodman is the Treasurer and has served on the JFS board for four years. He feels it is the responsibility of the Jewish com munity to assist our Jewish brethren in need. Brett states it has been a rewarding experience serv ing on the Jewish Family Services board. He has found that JFS Amy Mullen Amy Mullen has been on the JFS board for one year and cur rently serves as the Secretary. To Amy, Jewish Family Services rep resents the true meaning of tzedakah. She feels the JFS staff and her fellow board members are remarkable individuals who want to help others solely because it is the “right” thing to do. She feels honored to be a part of the JFS organization. As you can tell, this is a very committed board and each mem ber highlighted in this article takes their commitment to Jewish Family Services very seriously. JFS is always looking for addi tional volunteers. If you are inter ested in serving as a Mitzvah Maker, please contact Harriet Berlin, JFS Volunteer Coordinator at 704-442-9061.
