The Partnership for Excellence
in Jewish Education (PEJE) has
awarded Charlotte Jewish Day
School a grant under the Charles
Schusterman Small Communities
Enhancement Program for Jewish
Day Schools. This program serves
schools in communities with
Jewish populations of 15,000 or
less.
In addition to the cash grant,
PEJE will provide CJDS with a
“madrikh” (guide or coach) for
the coming school year. PEJE will
also subsidize the participation of
our principal and president of the
board in the November PEJE con
ference for grantees. CJDS will
also gain the opportunity to partic
ipate in the small community day

The Wexner Graduate Fellowship Program is designed to encourage
promising and talented Jewish men and women to pursue full-time graduate
studies leading to careers in professional Jewish leadership. The program
provides full academic tuition, generous living stipends, and annual
Foundation-sponsored institutes and learning experiences. Fellowships
are awarded to outstanding candidates who demonstrate the potential to
assume major leadership positions in the fields of the Cantorate,
Jewish Communal Service, Jewish Education, Jewish Studies, and the Rabbinate.

It should be noted that during
the 2001-2002 school year, CJDS
hired Dr. Charles Kaplan, a child
psychologist, as a part-time on
site staff member. Dr. Kaplan will
work closely with the PEJE
school network for participants in
the Schusterman program.
The day school will utilize the
cash grant and the madrich to
address the stated need to find
ways to accommodate special
needs, academic and behavioral,
within the regular classroom. This
must be accomplished in a manner
that does not penalize the more
typical students. The challenge
that CJDS identifies is hardly
unique. It is an unsolved issue in
many Jewish day schools. The
recommendations resulting from
the grant will therefore be of inter
est to many other Jewish commu
nities.

NC Echo Grant to Help
Expand Jewish Historial
Society’s Oral Histories
UNC Charlotte, Atkins Library
received a NC ECHO grant of
$47,340. UNC-Charlotte’s Atkins
Library will join the Catawba
Lands Consejvancy and the
Charlotte Jewish Historical
Society to expand its online oral
history project, “New South
Voices.” Drawing upon the
University’s oral history collec
tion, as well as those held by the
two partners, “New South Voices”
will provide online access to
approximately 500 audio-taped
oral history interviews. Atkins
library will design a multi-user
interface for the project and test
best practices for the presentation
of videotaped oral histories on the
Internet. ^
