The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2002 - Page 17 Sukkah-Hopping Surprise Every fall our students look forward to Sukkah-hopping. This enlightening activi ty shows the students how various families in the community celebrate Sukkot. The Sukkah itself is a unifying structure where families and friends gather. The big surprise this season was a miniature train that transpi>rted each class from the school to the first sukkah stop and played taped Hebrew music en route. “You never know what's going to hap pen around here,” exclaimed one student. “This school is so much fun.” ' The Siikkah-flopping train. Parents flocked to the morning program on “Keeping Your Child Safe in This Great Big World” at the Jewish Preschool on Sardis on October 8. Featured speakers were Daniel Starks and Dr. Donna Dillon-Stout. Daniel Starks, of NBC-6 “Don’t Be A Victim” gave many sobering facts about crime in the 21st century and challenged parents to take specific steps to protect their children. Starks had genuine compassion for raising safe, aware children in a confus ing new world that is markedly different from the one of a gener ation ago. He encouraged parents to be realistic about present dan gers and to make a family plan for emergencies. His firm belief that parents are the best teachers of safety empowered his audience. Donna Dillon-Stoul, PhD., may be one of Charlotte’s best-kept secrets. A practicing psychologist in the area, Dr. Dillon-Stout is an cxf)ert on working with children with anxiety. Her extensive expe rience at Harvard as a profession al — as well as in her own home as a mother — was apparent as she shared practical tips for com municating with young children about big issues. Her calm demeanor and conservative advice to both sharing information with children and allowing them to venture out in the world was an outstanding model for parents. She encouraged parents to set lim its, know the families of your chil dren’s friends, and do both in a loving way that envelops your children in .security and trust.
