The month of March came in
like a lion ... twenty inches of
snow ... a wind storm like none
ever seen ... and tremendous loss
and grief for several families from
our community with the death of
beloved family members. The
ages of those lost ranged from 54
to 91 years of age. I don’t know
about you, but these losses bring
me face to face with my own mor
tality, making me realize so clear
ly, that “there but for the grace of
(jod, go I” or someone I hold most
dear.
With the passing of 54-year-old
Lenora Stein, Executive Director
of CAJE, the Carolina Agency for
Jewish Education, Charlotte’s
Jewish educational community
faces a real challenge. Relentless
in her commitment to quality
Jewish education and learning,
she will be a hard act to follow.
Rabbi Mark Wilson delivered part
of the eulogy at Lenora’s memori
al service, held at Temple Beth El
on March 17. His poignant plea as
spokesperson for Lenora was that
we must commit not only to keep
ing her spirit and soul alive in our
hearts, but that we must also
assume her body, and keep her
world of mitzvot alive as well. He
reported that Lenora’s only regret
in dying prematurely was that she
did not have time to give back to
the community.
On the way home from the
service, a song from the Lion
King, “The Circle of Life,” filled
my car with melodious tune. It
sends a profound message to all
who listen: “Give more than you
take ... in the circle of life.”
Lenora, thank you for all you
gave. To the rest of us, may we be
blessed with the strength and the
years to give more than we take.
May we commit ourselves today
to make this community and this
world a better place for our chil
dren and for future generations.
May we embody the spirit of
those who gave and who are no
longer with us and elevate their
souls closer to God as we perform
mitzvot in their honor and memo
ry.
The month of May brings a day
of memory. Memorial Day. I chal
lenge each one of you to make
your commitment to memorialize
all those departed souls who pre-
ceeded us in death. You can do
this by supporting the Hebrew
Cemetery Association. Your tax-
deductible dues of $72 will reflect
your commitment to life and to
the performance of mitzvot.
