Volunteers Work
Round the Clock
for Super Sunday
Debbie Milgrim
Super Sunday was a huge success by any and all standards. Approximately 90 volunteers made phone
calls, wrote thank you notes, and assisted in the effort to call approximately 2,000 people. Special recog
nition goes to Jewish Family Services who provided the most volunteers for Super Sunday, and are the
winners of the 2004 “We Answered the Call Award.” Close behind were the Charlotte Jewish Day School
and the Jewish Community Center, followed by the Charlotte Jewish Preschool and Temple Beth El.
Because of the Jewish Federation’s allocations which support hunger relief in the former Soviet
Union and Argentina, and our local support of Jewish Family Services, Loaves and Fishes and the
Tzedakah Fund, the donations collected on Super Sunday qualify for a matching grant for hunger relief
from the Feinstein Foundation. Thanks to our volunteers and to the religious school students at Temple
Beth El and the Consolidated High School of Jewish Studies for their donations of Passover foods,
canned goods and paper products collected and donated to the Jewish Family Services Food Bank.
Super Sunday co-chairs Elaine Moody and Matt Samarel wanted to make the day fun for our volun
teers. All throughout the day, bells were ringing as solicitors signaled each other that a gift had been
closed. Drawings were held during each two-hour segment for gift certificates, generously donated by
local area merchants and restaurants (listed below). Rebecca Plaisance and Diane Neveloff were instru
mental in collecting these certificates. A total of $76,260 was pledged as a result of our Super Sunday
campaign, surpassing last year’s $71,000 total. A special thank you goes to the volunteers who gener
ously donated their time to make Super Sunday a success.
Many thanks to Wolfgang Puck for providing dinner for
our volunteers and to Phil’s Deli Strawberry Hill for
providing breakfast. A special thank you to Alltel for
providing cell phones for our use during Super Sunday.
The Federation also thanks the following local businesses
and business people for graciously donating gift certificates
for our Super Sunday volunteers:
The Charlotte Palm, Pacific and Vine, JoJo China Bistro,
Mellow Mushroom, Red Rocks Cafe and Bakery, Miro
Spanish Grille, Good OP Days, Thai Orchid, Carter
Meiselman, Cardillo’s, and Wolfgang Puck
Donald Jacobs
Many thanks to SuperSunday co
chairs Matt Samarel and Elaine
Moody.
